Re: 47 generator rear bushing
What's this mystery weep hole?
As I'm trying to fill the oil reservoir for the rear bushing bearing, oil weeps out of that little hole in the side of the reservoir below the level of the bottom of...

Re: 47 generator rear bushing
I personally don't overtighten the belt. I had an engine rebuilder do it once and I didn't loosen it before a road trip which resulted in the same thing but worse. See:...

Re: 47 generator rear bushing
I always loaded the oil fitting at the back of the generator every thousand miles as recommended by Ford. However, I made two mistakes. First of all, not knowing how the oil got through the bearing...

Re: 47 generator rear bushing
The last couple of days the generator has come on and run for about 20 minutes with a slight noise. Then I started smelling a burning smell. About as soon as I did the generator went off for about...

Re: 47 generator rear bushing
Thanks for the sentiments.
I'm still driving "Old Henry" daily and did two road trips in the last month, a 1,300 mile trip in three days to Virginia City, NV then Boise, ID then home and a 2,000...

Re: 47 generator rear bushing
Thanks for all the info.
Two more questions:
1. Since I don't have a tap to thread the bushing nor chisel to chisel it out, I wonder if this extractor for broken off plastic pipe could do the...

47 generator rear bushing
Confused! The rear bushing on my 47 generator is worn out and needs replaced. As I read the official Ford "Repair Manual Generating and Starting Systems 1933-1947" it says "If the bushing is scored...

Re: Grill screen air flow
I got suspicious of grill screens on a cross country trip in a full size dodge van many years ago. I bought and installed the screen that went clear across the front of the van. Eventually the van...

Re: Grill screen air flow
Since I've driven Old Henry everyplace I ever wanted to drive him, I've shifted my interest to "road trips" in my old 1982 17' Silverline Nantucket ski boat "Sharkie" with the original Mercury Black...

Grill screen air flow
I have always discouraged the use of screens of any kind in front of the grill because it reduces air flow to the radiator needed for cooling, especially at very high ambient temperature. But, I've...

Re: How do I buy Bob Shewman thermostats?
I've since suggested one improvement on this idea. Twist the single strand of wire on itself on each side so that only one strand has to be compressed by the hose instead of two. It also holds the...

Re: Great Plains Road Trip
Sorry I missed "The Landmark". I just went where Mrs. Google told me to go. Always the quickest route but not always the most scenic.

Re: Great Plains Road Trip
Speed 60-65 mph.
I didn't check my gas mileage on this trip. It probably was not as favorable as one might think on the flat land, the wind was blowing strongly against us much of the way.
I...

Re: Great Plains Road Trip
Since I drive my car every day and keep it maintained and repaired for that daily use, there really isn't any "trip preparation" that I do. If my 5,000 or 10,000 mile maintenance is due I do that,...

Re: Great Plains Road Trip
Average 60 mph 400 miles a day = 6.67 hrs/day. But, with a lot of photo and video stops, gas, restroom, and eating we were on the road 8-10 hours per day.

Car ran without a hitch. Just had to adjust my throttle cable once to keep it working as cruise control. That's all.

Thank you all for your concern. I am still alive and well. I did a 5 Day road trip across Kansas and Nebraska a couple of weeks ago but haven’t written it up yet. It is true that my passion has...
