Re: The new Burtz Mosel A engine

Tail dragger, As Terry and others have said "crush" is imperative to make the bearings round and tight in the block. If I were you I would get a new set of bearings and start over. I think the other...

Re: Max Speed of a Model A in Stock Form

Back in high school I drove a late 31 steel top wide bed. Best it could do was 63mph down hill. That baby was screaming as I think it had a 4.11 rear end. Later on with the 29murray sedan with B,...

Re: Oil grooves

Brent, It is not an "idea" it is a fact. I had my shop from the early70's until around 2000. I used hundreds of rods with circular annular grooves and babbitted and align bore hundreds of blocks...

Re: Oil grooves

Henk, To answer your question the block half of the bearings use a short longitudinal groove from the oil hole. This distributes oil across the face of the bearing. This works well, it just may be...

Re: Oil grooves

To Henk, I would rethink the "Machinist forgot the oil groove" thing. Go find the machinist and talk to him. Rick.

Re: Oil grooves

Does not matter A or B it works just fine. I did not use the X grooves in the rods either. I bought rods from Pauls Rods in St Louis. I had him put annular grooves in my rods. He liked the idea but...

Re: Oil grooves

My answer may cause some heads to explode ! I did hundreds of Babbitt and align bore jobs with no grooves in the caps. If those bearings where align bored and there is clearance the oil will go...

Re: Oil grooves

Hi Henk, Have you considered that maybe he did not "forget" the oil grooves? Do you have any pictures you could post. Rick.

Re: B block hole repair

As Brent and others have said that groove bothers me. If you want to try a repair in the car AND the deck surface is thick enough to cut 4 or 5 threads with an irontite tapered tap. I would use an...

Re: ignition

Brent has it right. I lived through the era of Junky points and condensers. Very frustrating. Glad to hear that quality points and condensers are available now. I found that using a B distributor cam...

Re: Marvel Carburetor

"neds 29" When I say "Clam Box" , does that make you hungry !! Saw an unrestored A sedan on one of my trips for a clam fix. Car drove off before i could talk to the owner. Rick.

Re: Plate Glass, Briggs or Murray Sedan

Guys, thanks. Jay Jay, that is exactly what I was hoping to see. Someone who has done this job, thanks. I am concerned about damaging the door panels. I had been thinking about slotting a putty knife...

Plate Glass, Briggs or Murray Sedan

Hi, I did do a search but did not find an answer. I have changed the plate glass to safety glass in a couple of Model A's years ago. IF you had an original paint, original upholstery car in good...

1929 Murray town Sedan

Engine number indicates a September engine. I could not find a date stamp on the firewall. The body tag is M601-4578. Can someone tell me when the Body was built? Thanks, Rick.

Re: 1931 Model A Deluxe Roadster

Looks to me like that could swapped back to a model A engine in a weekend which is what I would do. It looks like some one went to a lot of trouble to not make a mess of the car especially with the...

Re: Head stud repair with insert...Q

Hardtimes, To get your holes straight just use a cylinder head. Mark the holes you want to drill out for inserts on the head with chalk, I used heli-coils, and use the proper drill for the insert....

Re: The Terry Burtz 5 main bearing engine blocks are back on track.

Hardtimes, Yup crankcase pressure, All engines have it. How well the filler tube handles it depends on leakdown, RPM, wear. Road draft tubes where an early attempt to deal with it. Looks like no one...

Re: The Terry Burtz 5 main bearing engine blocks are back on track.

Crankcase compression: I have not read all the postings in this thread, I have not read all the engineering data. Has there been any discussion on crankcase compression ? All modern engines, at least...

Re: Engine knock at cruising speed?

Same question as Ernie, When you are at "cruising" speed where are you setting your spark lever ? It is very easy to over advance your timing and beat the heck out of your rod bearings.

Re: Is this normal wear? Aluminum cam gear

Bryan, I think you may have answered the what is wrong question. My guess is whoever "pressurized" the oiling system plugged the oil hole behind the cam gear. Your engine if full of Al. particles....
