Re: Compression test and Vacuum test readings need help

To my knowledge none of the national auto parts chains stock loaner leak-down kits, but you can get one at HF for $30 (https://www.harborfreight.com/Cylinder-Leak-Down-Tester-62595.html).

Edit:...

Re: Compression test and Vacuum test readings need help

Tells you that whatever's causing the disparity in compression numbers between 1/2 and 3/4, it ain't the piston rings.

Re: Babbit woes

I uploaded a PDF of an article in this post (https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1823977#post1823977) that discussed one version of the Babbitting process. Here's what it says about...

Re: Compression test and Vacuum test readings need help

Looking at the following guidelines on this page (http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/vacuumtune.htm):

So the drop to 0 seems like it's normal behavior, and the pulsating at idle could indicate...

Re: Vacuum testing to diagnose fast idle

Right, like the guides have worn away over time and now there's lateral movement as the valves go up and down, causing them to not perform as desired.

Edit: Wanted to share this response I got...

Re: Wiper Vacuum Lines

Could be because the vacuum comes off the intake manifold on the passenger side, so it would keep the engine compartment cleaner to just come straight off the manifold and back through the firewall,...

Re: Springfield Paper

There were 3 more paragraphs in the article than what I posted, but it was a different topic, it was speculation about whether Ford was going to raise wages. Nothing more about the factories.

Re: Model A Registration Woes

Fair warning here, most advice will be state-specific.

Re: Springfield Paper

I think this was an Associated Press wire services article. A similar article appeared on the same day in the NY Times. Maybe it's the one you want? Screenshots below.

Re: Original 1929 Town Sedan company car

Probably your best bet is to run a forum search on "7-tooth rebuild" or "7-tooth steering play" and then spend a few hours reading through the many many many previous discussions on this exact topic.

Re: Original 1929 Town Sedan company car

The short version is that the 7-tooth steering column is a single long piece, whereas the 2-tooth column is two pieces bolted together. So if you see a bolt on the top of the column, near the bottom...

Re: Vacuum testing to diagnose fast idle

I've actually checked out the coil already, way back in the beginning since it's such an easy thing to swap. I find a valve issue much more plausible on this engine, which hasn't been apart in 35...

Re: Vacuum testing to diagnose fast idle

Yeah, we went over a lot of this in the previous thread. Manifold and gaskets have been checked. The carb is nearly new, from Bert's. Steve at Bert's thinks it may be the ignition; I'm waiting on a...

Re: Vacuum testing to diagnose fast idle

Says you, with your set of tools. Not easy for me.

Yes, I was running full advance that's what the vacuum test instructions said to do. I realize the RPMs will decrease if spark is retarded.

Re: High compression head vs cooling

I thought the whole idea was that higher compression makes the combustion more efficient, transforming more energy into power and less into waste heat. So it would create less heat (unless your...

Re: Vacuum testing to diagnose fast idle

OK great, see this right here, that's what it was doing. What does "loose valve guides" mean?

Re: Vacuum testing to diagnose fast idle

The idle is higher and less stable than it was when I first got the car. It really used to have a nice idle. Somehow I screwed it up or a problem developed (like valves). I had to advance the...

Re: Vacuum testing to diagnose fast idle

Is that something I check by taking off the valve cover or by taking off the head? I've never worked on valves before, I have no idea what I'm doing.

Edit: Did some googling, looks like it's the...

Re: Vacuum testing to diagnose fast idle

Got a DM asking about a wet compression test on cylinder 2 – wet test showed 45 psi, not much different.

Here's the compression test result from the previous thread:

So maybe I should focus on cylinder 2's valves?

Re: Vacuum testing to diagnose fast idle

When I got the gauge plugged into the intake manifold, I started the car up and went through the same calibration procedure as before: reduce throttle, fiddle with the idle mixture screw, fiddle with...

Vacuum testing to diagnose fast idle

OK, we are back to discuss my fast idle problem in a clean new thread. Previous thread is here (https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=261057). At the end of that thread, it was recommended...

Re: Swapping to collapsible steering column?

The idea isn't that the column shifts back and collides with you, but rather that the car stops and your unrestrained torso continues moving forward, colliding with the column.

Re: Primer for YOM plates

OK thanks, this plate is pretty solid and only has moderate rust pitting, no dents, nothing I have to peen out. I'll take another look at the standard primer.

Re: Primer for YOM plates

I think different bodies that register and insure these cars take different stances on to what extent this thing is legally a car versus an artistic or historical representation of a car. And that's...
