Another magneto question

I recently posted questions about Vertex mags. and rotorwrench mentioned Fairbanks Morse mags.. I did a web search on them and couldn't find any made for a V8. So does anyone have info on Fairbanks Morse mags.? Thanks, Craig.

Usually found on old stationary gas engines.

Re: Another magneto question

Edison Splitdorf, Case, and Fairbanks Morse were companies that all got bought out by larger concerns. Case was purchased by Slick which was purchased by Unison which was purchased by Champion Aerospace an so on. I'm not certain where Faibanks Morse ended up but Teledyne Contenintal Motors (TCM formerly Bendix Ignition Systems) makes 8-cylinder mags to fit the Lycoming IO-720 and Slick may have too. The Vertex gained popularity due to its vertical design that worked well for auto racing applications and adaptations. I've even seen two 4-cylinder mags set up to run an 8-cylinder engine by the way they were timed. It took a dual drive set up to to it. Bendix Scintilla made magnetos for the R4360 aircraft radial engine and it had 28-cylinders.

Nice rundown, thanks!
