Vacuum wiper question My car's vacuum wiper works great. However, noticed that when applying vacuum to the wiper, it does allow vacuum leakage through it somehow. In other words, with tubing connected to the wiper and with the wiper control in the off position, you can still "suck" air through it. Is this normal? It's not bad enough to affect the way the car runs, but it is very obvious that it is not "vacuum tight" or even close. Thank you in advance.

Re: Vacuum wiper question You could try lubricating it, here is how: http://modelabasics.com/wiper.htm
Note: The diagram is for an era replacement. Also, visit this site for more information: MAFCA Tech Q&A - Windshield Wipers By Rick Black, Medford Oregon This page includes photos of original wipers and era replacements |
Re: Vacuum wiper question It is well oiled, thanks! The question I have is about vacuum "leakage" and whether or not that is normal.

Re: Vacuum wiper question I'm working on my '28 Leatherback and we hooked the wiper up today and it does not move. We noticed that when it is turned on you can hear some leakage. Would buying a gasket rebuild set take care of my issue? What can normally go wrong on those?

Re: Vacuum wiper question I finally broke down and sent my wiper off to someone who rebuilds these. I tried two different gasket sets and the quality of the paddles was terrible. It was less than a hundred bucks and I now have an excellent working wiper. If they are leaking they will cause idle and performance issues.

Re: Vacuum wiper question Do the rebuild kits normally do the trick on one that's not working?
|
Re: Vacuum wiper question rarely! the wiper case could be bad! The paddle needs to be fitted good on most.
|
Re: Vacuum wiper question Have you ever rebuilt one Gary?
|
Re: Vacuum wiper question Wiper cases can warp and become pitted over time.

Re: Vacuum wiper question I used Fickens about 15 years ago. Great job!

Re: Vacuum wiper question I recall (from my poor memory) when the wiper is set to off, the paddle goes to a "home" position where a round seal on the paddle is supposed to seal off the vacuum supply (the seal covers a large cicular port). Your seal on the paddle is probably not seating properly.

Re: Vacuum wiper question See

Re: Vacuum wiper question Excellent! Thanks.

Re: Vacuum wiper question I once saw a "farmer fix" where someone used an old aquarium aerator needle valve plumbed inline to shut off the vacuum to the wiper when not in use. It wasn't pretty but would work and allow wiper use until a proper fix could be found.....

Re: Vacuum wiper question This thread is a bit outdated, but I finally found a rebuild kit from Gas Light. $19.99. Brattons and Snyders said the supply was exhausted and wouldn't get any in for awhile if at all. 1 other vendor never bothered to respond to my inquiry, and yet a different vendor was selling the kits for more than triple the price of gas light so I didn't bother with them. I'll let you guys know how the rebuild goes, and hopefully I come back with a success story.
