gas tank welt picture needed
 

'30 CCPU
installed the gas tank yesterday and the welting just does not look right.
does the bead sit between the tank and cowl or flush to the outside?
pic's?

Here is what I am thinking, picture 1 is pre tear down, gas tank fits.
The rest are where I am currently at, body off of the chassis.
When we test fitted the body to the chassis we had to shim under the center bolts to bring the rear of the doors up 1/2".As it sits now the rear of the doors are low again.I read that when you adjust the doors you should loosen the tank.
Correct me if I am wrong but from what I see is that when the body is straightened again it will bring the front of the tank down for a better fit. I guess we will have to re-install the body to the chassis and see.(kind of answered my own question )

Does the bead on the welting get squeezed into the gap or protude to the outside?

The bead should be pulled tight to the seam, but none of the bead shold be inside the seam. It can be fun trying to do it alone. I helped my friend do his 31 widebed and it took a few tries to get it right.

Where you go around the corners, cut the flat part almost to the Bead every inch. And tape 1/4 inch wide by 4" long pieces of light rag (tee Shirt) folded in half to pull up on the bead where it has sneaked down into the recess of the Tank. After you get bead where you want it tighten the clamps down, and trim the rag very easily with a sharp Hobby Knife not cutting the Welt.

Picture #3 looks OK, but in pictures 2 and 4, the welt has gotten pulled in too far.

yes it has,but there is a wider gap at the firewall, the welt bead is somewhat loose inside that area

Changing gas tank welt is one of only things I dread doing on my A. I did mine by myself on my 31. You have to be in the right frame of mine and go slow. Shouldn't have to mess with mine for quite a while now.

Looks like you have your answer on the bead.

Picture #1 is a great demonstration of what happens when the mating surfaces aren't thoroughly painted before assembly. Once it rains on the car, water is sucked into the seam by capillary action and it stays wet for weeks. The beading fabric helps hold the moisture, it soaks through any surfacing primer and begins rusting almost immediatly.
The presence of silicone sealer will intensify this rusting process by 5X...

It appears the windshield frame suffered a similiar fate.

I can see you're in the primer stage and it looks great!
I like to sandblast these hidden edges and grooves and seal with epoxy primer, then paint, before assembly and final paint.
