Engine swap

Hi, I want to Pull the existing engine from my 30" coupe and install a temporary engine ( life is not good if I'm not driving my A" ) is it easier to pull both the engine and transmission as one piece and then reinstall in one piece? I hope you get what I mean. Thanks a lot Gino.

I always install in one piece but that is just me.

Re: Engine swap

I split them when I did it. I see no reason to remove the transmission if there is nothing wrong with it.

I split mine also.

Re: Engine swap

If I am just changing engine I just pull the motor. Reconnecting the ujoint clamshell takes as long or longer than swapping the motors. I only pull the transmission if I am unsure of it or the u-joints condition.

The limited times I have done this sort of things, I have pulled both at one time.

Re: Engine swap

Unless you're doing work to both I'd split

Re: Engine swap

Split forsure. It's hard enough getting the motor in between the stock motor mounts. Muchless while trying to put the transmission with the drive shaft at the same time.

Re: Engine swap

Yes the last time I did it I did it as one unit, I had a engine tilter. I wished I had just pulled the motor. Logan and the others are right, its just easier not dealing with the u-joint, even with the clutch issue.

really guys? I had my engine and trans out and the new engine and trans back in in less than an hour. Maybe it's because I am younger.:)

I'm 19 and have done countless engine swaps and the couple different shops I've worked at. You got lucky with yours, especially of you have stock motor mounts. I've had to use frame spreaders, and porta-power hydraulic jacks meant for body work to spread the frame rails. Then also take out one motor mount to get the motor into place. Then drive the other motor mount back into place with a 3 pound sledge. And thankfully I didn't have to do that while installing the tranny at the same time.

I just did a split. Takes a few hours, less if you have help.

Re: Engine swap

I install about 1-2 engines a month with the engines I rebuild. I prefer to split. I don't know what it is about repacking the U-joint with grease but I hate it! I don't go there if I don't have to. Now maybe if my wife would have bought me one of those cool cordless grease guns instead of a new shirt and tie for Christmas I'd change my mind...she didn't so...again, I would split it!
Good Day!

ps: I'm not complaining...the shirt and tie look good but a cordless grease gun could look better.
