This is per Snyder's catalog:
Use this handy fitting to hold the pump in place when you remove or install the oil pan. The fitting threads in where the slotted pipe thread plug goes on the side of the block between the oil pan and the valve cover at the center. Once it is installed, you thread the bolt in the center of the fitting in against the oil pump so it won't fall out. You thread this bolt in just snug enough to hold the pump, do not over tighten or you will bust the oil pump casing. U.S.A. |
Re: oil pump install need little help Lower side of the block is a threaded plug remove using a 1/4 " rod inserted in the side plug hole and pressed against the pump housing. or using a fine taper pipe thread (3/8-27F-PTF) screwed into the hole will hold it up. Once the pan is bolted on you remove this bolt. The pump is not designed for a set screw to hold it. Then put original screw back in to keep oil from coming out. Clear????

Re: oil pump install need little help Remember the spring between the pump and the pan bottom.

Re: oil pump install need little help thanks for replies, think i can manage. i wondered what the pipe threade to
block was for. okay so mount oil pump secure temorarily by threaded bolt and raise up pan to engine. install pan bolts remove threaded bolt. this is what i will do fredski |
Re: oil pump install need little help You might look into purchasing: Model A Ford Mechanics Handbook by Les Andrews A must have for Model A owners. Can be purchased at all Model A vendors or from MAFCA

Re: oil pump install need little help I shim it tight to the block, not too much.

Re: oil pump install need little help You can use a modern type block drain that raises off its seat when turned I find it works good to hold the pump in place, then remove & install original 1/8" pipe plug.Make sure pump shaft is aligned with tang on pump drive so pump will seat on block. I wouldnt have bothered to remove brg caps to prelube them.Pour a L or QT of oil down dist hole to prelube main & cam brgs,a bit of oil in plug holes & fire it up.As soon as engine runs, the rods will be oiled. When warmed up,change the oil.Since the pan is off, remove dipper tray & clean out the pan.If U have the brg caps off, then U might as well check the brg clearance.
