Chrome Process
 

In the For Sale section someone posted some chrome Model A parts for sale. My reply post/question was if those parts for sale were done using the standard chrome process or the Paint on Process. I recieved a lot of questions about what the spray paint on process is so I will post here for the benefit of anyone interested.

There is a gentleman on the east coast (Wind Gap, PA) who does this, in fact he actually did the Victoria Secret model's Outfits for a fashion show a couple years ago.

I dont think he knows what buttler finish is or he would have plated that emer. lever correct. Craig Ricker does a supper job on model A parts.

Also, let me throw this in: Does anybody know of or can recommend a
chrome shop that can replate original moto-meters? Sorry for the hijacking......:eek:

Holds up as much as you take care of paint job- using car wax. Putting it on Bumpers and such wouldn't be advisable since Rocks would chip the clear. Point of Ref- the Brake lever was $65.

Thanks Wuudie, I showed this to a coworker who is a biker. He said something that made me laugh. He said "wow, I bet that makes all those Chromasexuals happy!" I guess his term for people who like allot of chrome. I think it looks nice.:eek:

I too wonder how well it holds up. The process is not paint, it a multi stage process that deposits silver on the piece. I believe where the process would be most valuable is on pieces not reproduced and damaged severely that could be repaired even with bondo then coated with this process. We can buy repo shinny stuff for our model As, I am not so lucky on my 29 Olds.

The downside of this silver nitrate with clear over is the chipping around any bolts used to fasten the parts.

After paint is surely chipped after backing plates are bolted on, rust will creep under and lift the fake chrome.

Just like moisture creeps under a cut mirror's edge and lifts it.

To minimize, the rusting, you would want to touch up and try to seal around any bolts/washers/nuts with clear coat.

What about Nickle? Maybe you just add a little yellow to the clear coat.

He has lots of colors red/yellow/blue/green- he may be able to do something similar to Nickel- I never asked him.

Some people may like it some may be totally against it and consider it blasphemy- I just threw it out there since people asked me about it- It’s your toy- you do what you want with your toy.

in the old days we called that "okie chrome" . i have worked in a few chrome shops . it is a 3 step job . first you polish untill its perfectly smooth , the get all the grease etc off . then you copper plate , nickel plate then chrome plate . i guess you get what you pay for !!!!!!!!!!!!
