Will a '39 top loader bolt right up to an 8CM block? Rick

No, but if you use a '49-'50 Mercury or '48-'52 truck 1/2 bell or adaptor, it will.

AS V8 Bob mentioned, The 8CM will bolt up to any early V8 transmission with a 1 3/8 X 10 spline main input drive shaft if you use all the bell housing and clutch components of the 8CM or 49 through early 51 mercury with standard 3-speed or 3-speed with electric overdrive. Otherwise you have to machine the flywheel to fit the early long type clutch set up of the 59AB or earier V8s.

Make sure you get the matching starter plate for the bell housing you use.
For instance, 1949-51 Merc bell housing and starter plate will work.
