Mouse control

A friend told me a friend of his uses Irish Spring soap in his collector car to repel mice. He cuts the bar into slices and spreads it around car. In spring he has no mouse damage and a nice smell that is easily vented out of car.
Has anyone used this and was results favourable ?

Government FDA insured that our wonderful 1950's patent medicines now require doctor's prescriptions.

Government EPA insured that DDT for fleas & pentachlorophenal for wood treatment, along with lead paint that lasted over 30 years on wood siding had to be removed from our shelves.

Sell large 16 ounce Cokes & get arrested by Government DHH -- but Government says smoking Pot & driving is thumbs up.

Maybe moth balls, that really "work" 100% of the time in our Model A's are next -- just a friendly reminder that someone is currently monitoring our Model A lifestyles -- better stock up soon!

Already I can't smell the moth balls like I could until about 6 years ago. I think they have already been reduced in some chemical content.

The EPA probably wants to make them safe for children to chew on, because parents certainly can't be expected to be responsible for anything.

Re: Mouse control

Rodents use their sense of smell as a primary defense. Anything with a strong odor will certainly help but nothing is for sure. I use Bounce drier sheets, moth FLAKES, Irish Spring soap and peanut butter in traps. I've found that no matter what you use you need to check on it every couple of days.

Re: Mouse control

Had a bar of Irish Spring in the soapdish at our cabin over the winter. The mice gnawed it down to almost nothing by spring. They may not like the smell, but they seem to like the TASTE.

IMHO never use the D-Con pellets only the block type. Otherwise you will find a stash of pellets in your "A" as they don't always eat "food" they store it for later. I know this through first-hand experience.

Same here, snap traps and dcon. however i modify the snap traps by nailing small brads up through the back side of the trap so when it springs, their impaled to the trap. i was having a problem with the mice squirming out of the traps if it didn't break their necks.

Re: Mouse control

I try to be thoughtful of the mice.;) In the dead of winter, where can a mouse find water to drink? I always place a couple of jar lids of water on the floor around the garage for them. Naturally, you need to put a little anti-freeze in the water so that they can drink it.

There are no thirsty mice in my garage.:D:D

A friend told me he uses pepper, sprinkles around the engine compartment and inside the door openings, says the mice don't like pepper. I haven't tried it myself but i think I will. A mouse dropped into the heater blower fan of my Pt Cruiser while I was driving and made an awful out of balance racket. They had to tear half the dash apart to get it out so I don't want a repeat performance.

On the closed body types, if they have been restored, or sealed up properly, how do the mice get in ?

You better ask the mice, I know they can still get in, probably around the floor boards or pedal cutouts.

I have a mouse that's pretty slick. Licked the peanut butter off a snap trap, so I made sure I got the peanut butter under the trigger, and he got that too. Now I'm gonna arrange a couple of traps together so he'll have to walk the gauntet to get at it.

I've had the same problem so I put some peanut butter on the fold for the trap wire, to make it real slippery, then I set the wire right on the edge of springing.

I wish I knew how mice got in. I've had the biggest problem with mice in my MoPars. I might as well leave the doors open for them.

I'm not a Cat person but........... we have a stray Tom Cat that hangs around and I feed him a little to keep him interested. No mice, snakes, baby birds, lizards etc. So far he hasn't sprayed anywhere close to the house. He's a hard worker and complains very little.
