29 Roadster Pickup top

Another question about the '29 Roadster Pickup my dad and I just bought...

The top that came with the truck doesn't fold up. I've looked around at photos of other roadster pickups online, and it looks like they all either have the top on or completely taken off. I was only able to find one that had a folded up top that was down in the photo.

I'd love to have the top fold down instead of having to take it off completely. Does anyone know if there are tops out there that will work this way? Will a Roadster car top bolt on?

First roadster pickup, so I'm sorry if that's an obvious question. Thanks for any information.

Re: 29 Roadster Pickup top

La Barron Bonney makes a folding top for your truck. The stock top does not fold. The top off of a roadster will not fit your truck.

Le barron Bonney make a folding roadster pickup frame . But they didn't fold originally

like you say they had to be taken off or up. and no the roadster car one wont fit .

The roadster pickup top is fixed and has to be completly removed. LeBaron Bonney makes a foldable frame for them. No, a std. roadster top won't fit, much longer.
Nice 51 Merc. in your Avitar, great car.

Look at that, everyone jumped right in with a response. It's like synchronized swimming, but with car advice. :)

Thanks for the tip on Lebarron Bonney, I'll check them out.

As for the Merc, sadly that one is no longer ours. She was a ten-yer restoration that my father and I did bit by bit. Mild custom with a '49 flathead with Merc crank, aluminum heads and intake, and a Holley 360 carb. We sold her about a year ago. Probably the prettiest car we've ever done. Nice to hear it get some appreciation.

Thanks again,
Nick

Re: 29 Roadster Pickup top

So Nick, I gotta question for you, when you fold the top back, ...what do you lay it against?? Most people that have a folding top on these have found this out the hard way. Phaetons have top bow saddles, ...and Roadsters have top rests on top of the quarter panels. Look at this pick-up that we restored a few years ago and notice where the top anchor pivot point is. Now look at the top ledge of the cab. Are you going to lay the bows right on top of the side panels behind the doors? Look how much over-hang will be back there by the time the padding & top material is folded up. Gonna definitely be putting some stress on the top iron sockets and the sheetmetal. Sure I suppose you can build a cradle and mount it to the front of the pick-up bed but THAT would be straight from the TV show called McGuyver!! :D

IMO there is a reason why 'ole Hank' designed this truck with a non-folding top!! ;)
