1927 model a stock using allot of gas

We resently finished the model a electronic dist. stock rebuilt carb. runs great no smoke black or blue. The problem is it is using allot of gas. Shuo the gas ogg it will run for about 15 sec. no smoke plugs clean. Should it be this bad on gas?

How much gas it too much? Most Model A's get 15 to 20 mpg, even on 10% ethanol. Straight gas is better. How many miles can you travel on a tank full (10 gallons)? Are their any leaks between the tank and carburetor? BTW, a Model A will run on E85, but not well. I would't recommend E85 in a Model A.

When I turn off my gas the engine will run about 15 seconds or a little more with the stock Zenith carb, but this is really no indication of fuel mileage. Like Mike said, see how far you can drive on 10 gallons of gas. I fill my tank to the top, zero the trip meter, then drive until the tank is about half full, and then see how many gallons it takes to fill to the top again.

Dmarr35, is this a rebuilt engine? During break it you will use more fuel. as it wears in you'll see improvment, sometimes quite a remarkable difference.
I know of one fella who tore into his carb 3 or four times, the swapped out two other carbs to achieve better economy..........all before the new engine had done 700 Kms.
Be patient grasshopper.............

I think he means the run time from closing the gas valve. It may not mean much gas, like dipping a straw in water, blocking the open end with your finger and lifting, it will hold the water. Same thing with the gas line, plus the volume of the carb bowl is displace some with the float so it really isn't much gas.
