On my 39, the front and rear springs had badly worn leafs and the supports leaf eyelets were worn pretty bad. I have 14 on my original rears.

I ordered new springs from Posies, rears got 9 leaf. Maybe speak with someone @ Posies, to "spring" another opinion:rolleyes:

I would remove 3 or 4 of the shortest springs and install some liners between the leaves to reduce the friction.

Often every third spring is removed but not the top two.

Why not the top two?

Re: leaf springs on 39 pkp

I'm not exactly sure, but I think it may be because those two top leaves provide a lot of reinforcement and therefore resistance over the centre of the spring. They flex only a little compared with the longer springs. If the top two leaves are removed the flex increases in the centre, that's where the hole is, the area around the hole is a stress point ie the forces on the spring from both ends stop there. If undue flex is allowed to occur to the centre of the spring, it is possible that if sufficient strain is repeatedly placed to the centre of the spring that cracking may occur originating from the hole in the centre of the spring.

Re: leaf springs on 39 pkp

I took the overkill rear spring out of my 39 panel delivery and replaced it with a NOS 37 rear spring. It was a lot quicker than messing with the old spring and it has fewer leaves, softening up the rear end suspension quite a bit. I have a coule more of the NOS rear springs somewhere in the storage bins. I also took out the 4-speed and replaced it with a 3-speed. If you know anyone who needs a boat anchor, let me know.
