F100 steering box Is the F100 steering box worth the money?? or would I be better off restoring the one I have. I will be doing a LOT of driving this summer.
Thanks, Martin |
Re: F100 steering box I like mine. If you're going for a driver and not a points car, it's worth it I feel like. And it's not something that sticks out like a sore thumb.

Re: F100 steering box If you have the 2-tooth box, then rebuild & modify it & it will steer very easily. On my A,s I installed needle sector brg,s & had inside end of sector hsg cut back 0.140" for needle thrust brg to replace brass washer. Thrust brg-INA #TC1828 & thrust washer INA # TWC1828.For oil seal use C/R 11124 or C/R 11061.Bore sector hsg to 1.624 X.250 deep.I also used a short pitman arm & teflon ball seats on new steering balls. It steers so easy that I wouldnt even think of useing an F-100 steering box & it looks original.

Re: F100 steering box Each to his own, but I like my F100 box. By the time you do everything that Columbia suggests, you no longer have an original box anyway. And as Jordan says, the F100 box doesn't stick out like a sore thumb like some "mods" do.

Re: F100 steering box Like Vince said, a rebuilt original steering is a joy to drive, and if you want even easier steering just install the shorter pitman arm. There's a night and day difference between driving with a worn original and a restored original steering box.

Re: F100 steering box The stock one will work fine if in good shape.
If you need power feel steering because of medical problems, (arthritis etc) the F100 will give you that. You can steer them with one finger and they return by themselves. I like mine bacause I like quicker steering so I have a longer pitman arm on it. It's cheaper to rebuild the stock one. |
Re: F100 steering box CarlG The mods that I suggested for the 2-tooth box are all internal,so outward appearance is unchanged other than the shorter P-arm.If you put a C B crank in an A,then it is no longer original either!

Re: F100 steering box Ive never seen or had a stock steering box steer as good as one of my f100 kits, not braging just fact.(on ebay $650.00)

Re: F100 steering box Even if you have a perfectly restored original box with everything set up perfectly on the front end it still will not steer as nice as a f100 box would on that same front end. There is 20+ years of engineering improvements between the stock box and the f100. I have one of the f100's in my car and it works beautifully. But do I think everyone should rush out and get one, no. Mines on my car because my grandpa owned the car before me and he was 78 years old weighed 135 pounds without a ounce of muscle on him. There's no way he could have driven the car up until he passed away without that steering box. He just didn't have the muscle left to turn it sitting still. With the f100 he could steer it sittin still with little to no problems. I think that the stock box works fine, but for people that have no plans to go into judging or need something easier because they physically cannot steer the stock box anymore that it's okay to switch. the box mounts strait to the stock locations and can be removed with not trace of it ever being there.

Re: F100 steering box I have the f-100 from mell goss and it works great. 10 times better then the original i had before, an it was new rebuilt easy steer kit and short pittman arm. Some people just dont like change.

Re: F100 steering box I have the F-100 box in my 31 coupe, just like power steering, I made and adapter on the bottom for the light switch and nobody noticed I changed it. Walt

Re: F100 steering box I just drove a friends 1950 F1. I must say the steering in it was a wonderful surprise. So what year is the best F100 steering box to get?

Re: F100 steering box does the car need to be rewired with the f-100 box or can the stock switch be used?
