What is the final grit sandpaper do you painters use on the primer before putting on the color. I think if you use to fine you have a tendency to get waves on a flat panel ( doors) .I have everything flat using 220 ,thinking about putting a little more primer on and using 400 grit.I will be using single stage urethane and no CC. This is on a 36 w

The last 3 i have done I have blocked them with 320 wet and then gone back over them by hand with 320 wet. They have all been black single stage urethane. 3 coats of paint, block with 1000, hand sand with 2000 and buff. They have all came out ripple free. It takes alot of hand blocking to get one perfectly flat. By the time I'm done with one I am real tired of sanding. The end result is always worth it though.

I use 400 grit to avoid sanding scratches showing up in the final coat. I use a hard surface sponge kneeling pad cut to size for a sanding pad and only hand sand edges. Hand sanding can cause finger ridges.

Just shot my 41 Pickup today. Hand wet sanded with 400 then 600.

Specifically what brand/type primer and what brand/color are you using and do you plan to seal before color?

I use all 3M sanding products,there are a big difference in brands,will probably not use a sealer never have.A hard rubber sanding block is a must and easy on the corners and edges.

I finish primer with 400 or 600 if spraying only 2 coats. I've found sanding scratches with 2 coats and 400 grit. I don't color sand or buff, or wax even. I like the look of it unmolested out of the gun. This is relating to modern enamels. when I shoot lacquer I finish primer with 600 and use multiple top coats. I then color sand with 800 -1000 and then spray an overly thinned coat and wax the results.

At this stage you should have ever thing flat ,400 is to fill the 220 grit, it should take a light scuff using the hand (techniques required) .400 OK so long as you are putting a reasonable amount of paint on, 3 coats .Some Met base coats need . 600 grit .
