Gmi horn information

Of the five Model A horn manufacturers, there seems to be little information about the GMI brand. The judging standards tell us of the years used and the changes made, but do not say much about where these horns were made. I've even seen them referred to as GIM. Does anybody have more details about these horns? Any information will be appreciated!

Look up Roger Kauffman ,He has a solid ,complete GMI horn from my 1930 roadster. I used another different horn. He needed the GMI for his collection. This went back years ago and he might put come light on you questions.

Re: Gmi horn information

I have the "GMI" horn on a Canadian-built roadster. Great sounding horn.

Les Andrews Handbook - Vol 1 refers to the horn as General Industries Mfg. (G.I.M)

Other sources refer to the name as "GMI", (with full name unknown), claiming that it is the best built horn (and rarest) of the five.

I too, would be interested in learning more about the manufacturer.

Re: Gmi horn information

The J/S refers to this horn as G.I.M (General Industires Manufacturing), further stating that:

"The initial horn had an embossed Ford script and a G.I.M. mark stamped or embossed in the center of the motor cover. In Sept 1928, the Ford script was discontinued and the G.I.M mark was stamped on the motor cover through Oct 1929. The mark was embossed for the remainder of production."

While not questioning the accuracy, I would be most interested as to the source of the J/S information on the G.I.M. horn

The poor photo of my motor cover shows a "stamped" (pre-Oct 1929?) G.I.M mark, although it is on a 1931 Canadian Roadster.

Speedster, do you, or anyone else have a photo of the G.I.M. mark for comparison?

Ok, Here are several pictures of a cover off one of my cars.. I think this is of the later style as the lettering is raised & not stamped in..:)

heres another version of the GIM horn
this one would have trouble in judging as the trademark is at around 10 oclock on the front of the bell, not at the bottom where the drain hole is
there is no other stamping
ive had trouble with horns not being given full credit ,because they couldnt find the markings
i have an Ames with very faint stampings ,on the bell, the cover and the mounting bracket, because it was judged indoors in poor light ,the horn was declared a reproduction, because there were"no manufacturers marks on it"
both horns have the barest amount of paint, not even primer on them
and were beautiful to start with

heres another original horn
it has the trademark on the bell at about 4 oclock
it appears the trademark could be stamped anywhere on the rim

also stamped on the motor base at about 6 oclock and on the back cover
the innards are completly different than any other horn

Re: Gmi horn information

Mot, if you would not have posted those photos, I would have never known about the logo mark on the bell rim. Thx!

I just found my faint GIM logo at the twelve o' clock position. In the off-season, I might have to strip the horn down and repaint. It appears that it was painted green at one time under the current black, which is obstructing the trademarks.

Thanks to all for some great information - especially about the logo not always being at the 6 o'clock position. Keep those posts coming! :D

The Judging Standards have it right and do indicate the location of the trademark on the motor base and the projector flange varies!
