Starter end play

What is the starter end play tolerence for the flathead starters? I tested the starter and generator off of the 21 stud 37 engine today and both seem to be in working order. But the starter has what seems to be abit excessive end play. The book I ordered yesterday is not here and I might as well get this taken care of while I am waiting. Also are there any book recomendations?, keep in mind I am only using the engine from the 37 and already have Mac VanPelt's transmission book. Likely will be using a 39 rearend that will need a good going through. Thanks Rod

Guessing there isn't a spec, so will shim it until I am happy with it. Thanks Rod

My 49-51 shop manual does not give an end play spec. it just shows a # 11036 thrust washer on the commutator end. it is a fiber washer. don't use a metal washer.

Yup, just shim with a fiber washers until end play is just noticeable by hand feel.

Thanks, Thinking near 1/8" is abit too much. This should take the same shim and washer as the A and I do have those on hand. Likely they are shot. Rod
