Amp Meter Connectons ? I am new to haveing an "A" so please bear with me on what may sound like a dumb question .
Can anyone tell me which way is correct to connect the amp wires on my "A" ? In Les Andrews book ,"Troubleshooting & Diagnostics" , on page 4-14 , a pic shows Neg side to Bat , and Pos side to all electrical circuits . But in the next colum it says "the charge side of the ammeter is connected to the battery by way of the wire from the terminal box to the starter switch post" . And" discharge side of the ammeter is connected to the output of the generator and all electrical circuits , through the three wires connected at the output of the generator cutout relay ." So which is correct ? In most all wireing diagrams I have found in the books I have , the Neg & Pos sides of the amp is not marked , showing which wires go where . |
Re: Amp Meter Connectons ? This schematic makes it clear. Download, print, and laminate this for future use.

Re: Amp Meter Connectons ? Since some repro guages register backwards, it's best just to connect the ammeter and turn the lights on to make sure the meter shows discharge. If it shows charge, then reverse the wires.

Re: Amp Meter Connectons ? I agree with Tom. Some of the ammeters are model T. Model T was negative ground, just the opposite of the model A and will cause the ammeter to register backwards.

Re: Amp Meter Connectons ? FYI, I have found many repro have loose terminals and have had to dis-assemble to tighten. Not an area to have loose connections!

Re: Amp Meter Connectons ? MAKE sure the connections are TIGHT, or you might have a FIRE. Also from time to time as you are driving just touch the gauge, if its hot the terminals are loose or some thing is loose and causing hi resistance and that is causing the heat. Iceman
