36 fuel pump looses prime

The fuel pump on my 36 (recently rebuilt engine, fuel pump etc) looses prime after 3-4 days of not starting. I'm pretty sure this is the problem for despite prolong cranks no fuel exits the pump and with carefully filling of the filter bowl and line to the carburetor it starts right up. If I start the next day or two it fires up nicely but then the pump seems to loose prim. The lines leak no gas and it will take full throttle with no problems. So do I have a vacuum leak some where? Where is this most common? Or what to do about it. Thanks Bruce

Re: 36 fuel pump looses prime

After standing for 3 days the 36 pump should be drained back to the tank. There should be fuel in the carb. and the engine should start on this gas. If both are dry the fuel pump should be able to draw fuel from the tank and start delivering fuel to the carb by about 20 Sec. of turning the engine over with the starter motor and a good battery. The 36 fuel pump does not have a filter bowl it does have a reservoir under the top metal cover. The two gaskets on the metal cover are often a source of vacuum leaks especially the cover to bowl gasket, becomes dry and shrinks but once wet will swell to seal the leak. There is a fuel pump input flex line with a check valve that may solve your problem and keep fuel in the pump. See the V8 Times ad for the flex line info.

You probebly have a leaky inlet valve in the pump.A leak in line some where will not leak gas. It will suck in air when running. You can put a good rebuilt pump on there or add an electric one as a back up close to the tank. OMO.. ken ct.

Get the flex hose with a check valve from Robert Shewman. [email protected]
It works!

I had the same problem on my 36 sedan--figured out it was the gasket on the top cover. Good luck.

Should be a fresh cork one and fit correctly and a small fiber or nylon one under the bolt on top. That must seal also. ken ct.Bolt should be as long as possible w/o touching bottom. These are very easily striped out with too short of a bolt. 1/4x28.
