Need Some Set Screws

I need a few 3-48 set screws. I've checked a dozen local and online sources, they all want me to either buy 100 or them or they want me to pay a huge premium in shipping.

The length can be anything from 5/16 to 1/2" or more; I can always cut them down. The tip style doesn't matter.

Two would get me by, four would be comfortable.

I'll happily pay anything reasonable, plus postage; they can travel in an envelope for whatever a postage stamps costs now.

If you can help, please drop me a PM. Thanks.

Any good hardware store can fix you up.

Is 3-48 what you use for the Chevy distributor advance plate? Next question is, what vacuum can are you using? B1, B28.....? Inquiring minds want to know.

Yo Richard, if it is what I guess, do you think there would be interference with a button head? There are loads of them on epay. Smallest set screw I saw was #4-48, $6 plus s/h for 100.

No, I've been using 4-40 set screws.

I use an adjustable canister... B33 I think it is. They're available from Crane, Accel, and others.

I chose a set screw in order to keep from upsetting the balance of the cam plate. Might not be a lot, but a screw with a big head might speed up wear on the upper bushing.

Fastenal has them. You can buy 1 or 100.

I called Fastenal first; I buy lots of stuff from them because their store is fairly close.

All of their 3-48 set screws are special order items, and the problem is often minimum order quantity. For example, one 3-48 has a 70-piece minimum plus a special order shipping charge.

I'll be talking with them again today about some possible alternatives.

Well, neither Home Depot nor Lowe's carry anything smaller than 4-40.

Thanks for that lead. Unfortunately, their shipping charge was almost bigger than cost of the items. It would have cost me $25 for ten tiny set screws and a tiny tap.

Find something else you need from McMaster and combine the order. I found they have one of the cheapest shipping charges of any supplier I have dealt with and the fastest shipping. G.M.

Richard, do you have any True Values near you? I find that they still stock some of those hard to find and neat to have items. It pisses me off how Lowes and Home Depot have run most of the mom and pop stores that carried these items out of business.

Funny you should say that. I stumbled onto a local guy who repairs and rebuilds pumps and their motors. He didn't have the set screws, but he was just about to phone in his regular order to McMaster! He offered to include my set screws as a favor. He even offered to loan me a tap when I needed it.

This is why I love small towns.
