starter rubber ring

I have a 292 engine and when I pulled the starter the rubber ring fell off and into a number of pieces. I this ring really needed and are new ones available? Thanks in advance Jim

Jim, mine came out intact, I would guess its to keep water out, maybe oil from the rear main. I've seen them in the parts catalogs, they are in the shop and I'm in for the night. Mark

They are such a hassle to fit in while holding the starter with one hand and starting the screws with the other hand, mine is on a hook on the wall. Its been there for years.

I'm with you Don. They are not too bad to put in when the engine and box is out of the car but otherwise forget it.
I haven't had one on mine for nearly twenty years.

As Don and Rick indicated it's not really needed, except maybe if you car is a Concours car in a show.

I remember my old man helped another guy put an engine in once and one of them put the rubber gasket in and got it cocked where it hit the flywheel. They both laughed saying "that noise will go away". I guess it doesnt. They took it out & threw it away.
