2 tooth steering Box finish

Was the finish on the 2 tooth steering box (not the column) black enamel or black lacquer? The 2011 JS page 8-2 says lacquer but the MAFCA Paint guide, 3rd ed., page 15 says black enamel?

I beleive that enamel was dipped and I would think that Ford would not have dipped the steering box if races had to be installed. Either way if you are looking for points following the R&JS is the way to go.

Re: 2 tooth steering Box finish

The steering box was painted assembled and I would assume they had masked some areas with quick jigs. I just read this in the paint book. I will be painting my box in the not too distant future.

I believe they would have sprayed a gloss black alkyd enamel. The first coat would have been a special formulation for attaching to the metal, if they did more than one coat. Because it was an unprepared cast finish and not too thick a paint coating I am guessing it would not have looked very glossy.

I could be wrong on the above information. I am taking what I have learned about other parts and applying the info to the steering box.
