starter

I thought my battery drain was from the alternator but it is from the starter! What would cause that in the starter? Thanks

Re: starter

Probably in the starter switch. That is the only connection to the battery except when starting. Check it with an ohm meter.

How did you come to that conclusion? I ask because I would think a bad switch would cause the starter to want to spin if it was shorted?

Re: starter

Put a volt meter between the battery cable and starter switch with no wires attached to the switch and you should read 0 volts. If you read voltage then you have something either shorting to the starter or to ground from the cable stud.

Someone posted here recently about a shorted stop light switch shorted by being sprayed a long time ago with a zink like coating which rendered the insulating washer useless!(SHORTED)
Maybe your starter switch was sprayed?? The insulating washer is the one under the nut, under the cable, on the switch. Bill W.
