6V to 12V generator field coils
 

Put an '53 8RT in a 29 roadster. The engine has an original generator I want to convert to 12V. Who makes 12V conversion field coils, and what else do you need to do to the generator, if anything ? I understand the other electrical issues, it is just the orig. generator conversion I am concerned with. Thank you Fordbarners.

You can get field coils for most '56 and newer Ford products. Patrick's used to sell them - don't know if they do or not. I used to see them pop up on eBay once in a while (I bought a NOS set for my last conversion).

You will also need a voltage regulator....I try to use a smaller 30A one with the field-coil-only conversions.

I have seen those coils advertised in several old Ford part suppliers catalogs. I have occasionally wound my own generator coils. Made an inexpensive wooden bobbin winding mold and wound new coils with modern high temperature insulated magnet wire. To wind 12v coils I wound twice the number of turns and half the wire size (diameter) used in the six volt coil. The advantage I had at the time was working for a company that made motors so I could get as much magnet wire in any wire gauge that I needed.

i have read that the 6v gen will work without changing the feld coils as long as a12v voltage regulator is used. may be some one on this site has tried it .i never did try it

An easy way is to get a 56 up generator and swap the field coils. The coils have a hard time going bad.

I just use a 56^ generator barrel, armature and rear plate- trimmed to the barrel size... Front plate bolts right on, watch the spacing- seems I had to put a spacer to keep the armature away from the front plate... I like having the ball bearing rear.

Have found 56 up generators at the swaps for $5 a few times, so I buy them when I can...

I put 12 volt field coils in my 8BA generator. Then used a 12 volt Ford regulator. Works good. Remember that you will not have full amperage because you are still using the 6 volt armature which has fewer windings.

This can work depending on the resistance of the field coils...

I picked up the following parts for my fan mount generator converion, should know more this weekend but initial review shows that the Armature is too short for the fan mounted application Im trying to build. May fit but wont be able to use the nut, just pully pressed on. Parts cost me arount $70 shipped.

GOT mine from certified auto electric in OH . www.certifiedautoelectric.com. they advertise in early v8 magazine.
