rear wheel safety catches
 

Does anyone know anything about safety catches for the old Fords so rear wheel won't come all the way off in case an axle breaks. Thanks Rick

Yes - Speedway used to carry them. I have a set I bought from them, but only used a very short time.

They attach using the bolts for the wheel cylinder.

If I still have them and you want a set, you can have them for the cost of shipping

I am using a set from Speedway. My advice is to not use the bolts that came with the set. Use studs with washers and a nut on the outside. It sure makes life easier if you have to work on your brakes etc.

Vern Tardel makes them, speedaway copied them.....but they don't work with the lincoln brakes.

I have the Speedway retainers on my 46 coupe. I really had to grind on them to get them to not rub on the drum.

I use them on our '39 CS and '47 Convert.:) I'd like to put them on our '39 LZ. Does anyone make them for Lincoln Zephyrs, or will we have to fabricate something?:confused:

Hey Vic, Once upon a time you could buy a kit for the early Fords and I believe it would also work on the Zephyr. It had a ring that fit over the hub where the bearing and seal is and had bolts that went throught the backing plate bolt holes. To keep this from letting the hub slide off when an axle broke it had another ring that got welded toward the end of the hub . I have been searching for a picture of one of these and if I find it I will post it. The only ones I see for sale now are the ones that hang out over the drums and I dont think they will work on the Zephyr.

I had the same problem with fitting mine on my 41. Glad I had them I broke my drive axle a month ago and they do work.

SAFETY HUB ADAPTORS-REAR 1928-48

1928-48. Temporarily holds the axle, hub and wheel in place if the axle were to fail. Set of 2 for the left and right sides of the rear housing. Comes with lock rings and hardware. Lock rings need to be welded in place after installation. Hub not included. 211A P. 422

Thanks Enbloc. Do you know how they actually fit on the car? If you happen to find a photo of those installed on a car or explain how they are installed please post it also. I wonder if they somehow fit where the stock Ford grease retainer is. What are those long 'pins" for? Thanks, JIM

The large casting slids over the bearing housing inside the drum. The small steel ring is then welded to the bearing housing in the appropriate place. The casting is now trapped on the hub by the welded ring.
Two of the studs are threaded into the casting and protrude towards the backing plate. Two of the backing plate bolts are removed and the studs will now take their place in the axle casing.

What you end up with is the casting "floating" around the hub. If the axle was to break and start to move it would be stopped by the ring hitting the floating casting which itself is fixed permantly to the axle casing.

When fitted you would have to undo and remove the nuts on the studs that are attached to the axle housing if you wanted to remove the hub as normal.

Enbloc, Thank you very much for all the helpful details. That looks like something I would like to try making, (wish I had a lathe) just for the personal satisfaction of doing so. If anyone buys a set and installs them, please take an post photos of the step-by-step process. Thanks again to all those folks who conributed to this thread. JIM
