Number on Roadster Body Today while working on my early 28 RHD Roadster I found the mark F115 on the left hand side of the body cross member that the front of the seat riser is riveted to. Can anyone advise if this is a body/chassis number or a part number, and if a body number a production date for it? The engine number is CA5922 but it may not be the original. Thanks in anticipation. Cheers, Gavin.

Re: Number on Roadster Body Hi Gavin.
That is your body number. All 28 and most 29 vehicles had a body numer starting with the letter 'F'. This is a really early number, and it appears to me that the engine would belong to the body number. The 'CA' prefix on your engine block stands for Canada. I have lists of many body numbers and their corresopnding engine number. If you would like to contact me, ph 03 312 4686 any time. I am in Oxford, Canterbury, NZ. |
Re: Number on Roadster Body It is thought that the "F" desegnation on the body stood for "Fordson" which would of been the Ford's plant in Dearborn.

Re: Number on Roadster Body Hi there, this is good info.
I have a 1930 roadster (sold new in New Zealand) but can't seem to find a number? Would it be in the same spot as the earlier model A's & if so what sort of number range would i be looking to find? |
Re: Number on Roadster Body 1 Attachment(s)
Hi Kiwifruit.
Your RHD 1930 Roadster will have a body number starting with either a 7 or an 8 than a 'F' then a number. Ie 8F 1635. 7F Roadsters had the early style dash, whereas the later Roadsters had the 8F designation and the ribbed dash. See body number pic below. Les. |
Re: Number on Roadster Body thanks Les,
you are a legend! |
Re: Number on Roadster Body The Canadian RHD Model A's that have F with a number were built at Ontario Plant, referred to as Ford City in 1928 '29. It was an area of Windsor.
The A bodies built at Detroit Plant [ commonly known as Fordson in early A era] also use the F letter stamp. This had me stumped for awhile until Model T guru Hap Tucker provided photos of Canadian T's with the F letter stamped on firewall [ Ontario Plant]which can not be confused with American T's as they were stamped on the floor as per Model A's. Another clue to the Ontario F numbers is lower digits due to low production compared to the US. There are some bodies [ RHD export but not Australia] that do not have a body number, just as in the USA. I know a local unrestored '29 rdstr with no body number. Hope this is helpful. |
