36 gas mileage
 

what are you guys getting for gas mileage in your 35,36's with a stock motor and 411 gears? i am getting 9 mpg. i would like to increase the mpg

oh a anouther question, i have a 35 motor that has flat top pistons, and heads for domed top pistons , would this have something to do with it?

I get 12-14 on a Strom 48 carb same car with 3.78 RE. Either you drive it real hard or you need a carb rebuild job.Your also lowering your stock compression ratio by using domed heads with flat top pistons.ken ct.

i drive real easy. would lower compression have something to do with it? also i plan on rebuilding the carb that is next on my list

i just got a Kand N air filter for my pickup. when i first started it it, i could tell their was a difference in the way it ran. the weather has been not to good hear so my pickup has not been out for about 2 weeks. Ken i got a Stromberg kit from Baxter Ford parts

i went to the Stromberg site, i see that there are different power valves. What size power valve and jets would i need for my stock 35 motor ? also i have seen adjustable jets, are they any good?

Brendan ,This 35 with a 411 differential gets about 15 m.p.g.. This 35 with a 378 gets closer to 17 m.p.g. Very disappointed in 15 m.p.g. and figure its time for some adjustments. Both motors have good compression. Good luck with your pickup. You have rebuilt the engine so there has to be an easy solution. I swear radial tires helped my m.p.g. a bit.

i would be vary happy with 15 mpg. with gas at 4.39 a gal hear in Santa Rosa i figure i need to do something.

35+36 usually have diff strombergs on them,i would call Baxter ford parts for a recomendation. ken ct.

any time you lower compression you lose power, which means you use more fuel to move your car the same distance as a higher powered engine, and unless your in real hilly country i would go to a 3:78 rear end

Brendan,
If mileage is primo and you aren't using a Stromberg 97 find one and
rebuild it...your motor will hardly know the difference if at all. I'd start with 45 jets
and #65 power valve....standard for a 97. Baxter has good stuff so the kit will
probably suffice. The hidden culprit in a Stromberg is the power valve....they leak
all to often. For free I'll check your PV in a simple fixture I have. Yep new ones leak
about the same percent of the time used ones do.
I sure agree with the compression thing....you're killing yourself. Heads for
flat top pistons are like dog poop, they are everywhere. Think about trading yours
for the right ones.

I was clear as mud on the carb....the 97 will not adversely effect the
performance of your car but it will cause an increase in fuel economy. Since you
are on the right coast you might get ahold of Max Musgrove in Utah...fyi he builds
Strombergs 100 at a time and is THE guy who breathed life into the English 97's.

Brendan, visit the Ford Green Bible chapter 5 pg 431 rebuild kit #'s it show's confirmation as Charlie stated jet's #45's, 36-38 90hp. Charlie and KenCt are 2 of the best in carb rebuilds, as you know I had Kenct do mine and it's smooth. I also agree with the proper heads and flat piston will be less air space leading to better compression. I know u know many folk your way so wouldn't be to hard to chase some down, if you don't already have them.

Get the correct heads for flat top pistons & switch to 3.78 or even 3.54 gears & your mileage will improve.By the way,I wish our gas was as cheap as yours!
