30's Ford Motorcycle...? 2 Attachment(s)
I know this isn’t Model A related but I’m not a member of the “other” blogs. Thought I’d share…..I think this is a motorcycle the way Henry Ford would have made it if he did. Notice the spare tire covers for fenders, the Model B 16” or 18” wheels, Baby V8 flat head, and headlight from…..? These were taken infront of Patrick Air Force Base, here in Cocoa Beach Fl.

I like the forks made of a couple of front axles.Take a look at the flathead powered motorcycle sold by Honest Charlies.(you must remember them)It's a pretty slick rig.Quite a few of them were bought by guys to put them away for a few years.I almost bought one,it was half the price of a new car.

Re: 30's Ford Motorcycle...? There is a company in (I think) Minnesota that makes motorcycles with 60 hp flathead Ford engines. They are works of art, not the homemade looking one in the photo. I'll see if I can find the company ad and post the picture. E LaBrash

Re: 30's Ford Motorcycle...? Nope, it was Illinois. Google; Ford Garage V8 60 hp Ford Motorcycle. I have 6 of the 60hp engines in my shop, they are kind of a novelty, you can pick them up and put them on the shelf without a lift -- unlike a Model A engine. EL

The guys that updated my roadster also build motorcycles around vintage engines...
The first 2 shots are a bike with a flat-head V-8 The other shots are of a bike built around a 1932 Lincoln V-12 - the 'spare' is the radiator... Both sound way cool and are a blast to ride. Well balanced and handle well... just hold on tight... |
Re: 30's Ford Motorcycle...? Those are nice, especially the V12. I’ve seen bikes with radial engines in them too mounted both inline and transversely. I just really like all the period items used to make up the bike I pictured. And most of it being Ford Doesn't hurt either. I just didn't care for the front fork design. I thought it could have had cleaner lines.

Re: 30's Ford Motorcycle...? A friend use to ride an inline four Indian motorcycle. His comment was about the torque of the engine. The torque would try to lay the bike on its side. you did not want to accelerate in the middle of a curve if you were going in the wrong direction. I guess the Boss Hogs have a way of cancelling the torque with some kind o counter rotating fly wheel.

I do not know for sure. I guess maybe the fly wheel that cancels out rhe torque would be gear driven and it would be driven in the opposite direction. The counter torque fly wheel could ride on a bearing on a shaft and driven by a pinion gear off of the main flywheel. They have to do something because the torque from a SBC would be a lot more than an old Indian four cylinder engine. I think the Boss Hogs lack a transmission. Maybe some planetary gears. I am just guessing. |

Re: 30's Ford Motorcycle...? I regularly ride an in-line 4 and a flat 6 and have ridden several small block Hoss's.. Torque really isn't an issue.. Some fellas would even complain about the torque from the old small BMWs, I rode them for 30 yrs and never found a problem.. This kinda makes me think about the bike [302 Ford with Ford-O-Matic 2 speed] I started in the 70's and its been collecting dust all these years.. It's almost ready to ride, but, I don't do hard-tails anymore..

Re: 30's Ford Motorcycle...? The Boss Hoss's I’ve seen had a Trans, a power glide I believe. And some were available with Big Blocks. I don't think they counter the torque. They just have a really wide flat treaded tire to keep them stable. Just my observations of the ones I’ve seen at Daytona Bike week.

Not only are the wheels stock 1935 Ford 16" wires, he also used the drums, brakes and hubcaps front and back. He has the round brake and clutch pedals too. The gas tank IS made from a Ford truck hood and two Harley tanks. The front forks are made from using about 2/3 of a Ford front axel on each side. In spite of all of that weight, he handled it pretty nimbley, through a huge crown of people. Unfortunately, I did not have my camera along. MIKE :) |
