60 hp water pump removal

Hello all,

I recently picked up a 1937 60 hp. The water pumps are froze up and won't turn with out a lot of force. I bought rebuild kits from Mac at Van Pelts and he is a great source of info but I'm still looking for a little help. Is there a place I can buy the proper wrench to remove the pumps ? They are the internal type and I believe a spanner wrench is needed . I would appreciate any leads on repair manuals also. It will run if I pour gas down the carb so now I'm going thru from the gas tank forward to clean her up. Thanks ,Ted

I found a spanner wrench, the kind used for fire hoses, works pretty well. Marvin

Thanks Marvin.
I was told a plumbers wrench would work , but the ones I've found at the box stores are not up to the job. There's not much room with the fan pilots on and I don't want to break them.

Hi tbauer : I use an old J. H. Williams adjustable hook spanner # 471, 3/4" - 2".

Mc Master Carr list one as part # 5471A11 in my old catalog. You can try online for a current price.

I have attached a picture. Most V8 60 HP pumps are/were removed or tightened by using a punch and hammer so the notches may be not as sharp to catch the spanner. Lots of soaking and patients will go along way. There are two styles, tapered and straight. The newer kits should cover both. The pulleys tend to break. Once apart square up the notches. Well I got the pumps out but not without destroying one. So now I'm searching for a replacement. If anyone has a pump body to sell I sure would appreciate it. Thanks

You need to tell everyone if your pump's threads are tapered or square into the bore...

This post is for anyone who finds their way here looking for the spanner to remove water pumps from a v8-60. I ordered the referenced J.H. Williams wrench in post #4. It was too thick to fit between my pulley and the pump housing. I found a JW Winco wrench A52-55 Hook Wrench w/Nose that worked perfectly on my pumps. Part number A54650.

Thanks Dan for providing that missing nugget.

Re: 60 hp water pump removal

Just an FYI. These pumps can be difficult to rebuild without the correct tools.

Re: 60 hp water pump removal

Would you explain the difficulties a bit KiWi? I've got the Van Pelt rebuild kits and have started taking mine apart. It will take a good bit of soaking just to get one of the springs to slide out. The other wasn't too bad. I'll have my son press the pulleys off at his shop and press the new shafts in. It seems like the threaded body part should slide off leaving just the shaft in the pulley, but mine don't want to come off. I'd hate to miss something critical.

I just discovered a cutaway view of the pump that explains why the pulley, shaft, and housing all have to be pressed.

Re: 60 hp water pump removal

The notched nut should rotate on the pump body. The nut will slide off the pump body when they are aligned properly. Be extra careful with the pulleys. Usually rebuild kits work on the tapered or the flat face pumps.

Re: 60 hp water pump removal

I’m looking for a pulley for the straight v8-60 pump. These cast pulleys must be pretty brittle as I had one broken at a machine shop when they tried to remove it. If anyone has a pulley or a too-bad-to-repair pump with the pulley on it, I’d appreciate being able to take if off of your hands.

Thanks,
Dan
