SNYDER'S High compression heads Has anyone done a comparison of the 5.5 to 1 and the 6.1 to 1 Snyder's high compression heads . I have installed three 5.5 's for other people and they ran strong. They all had reground touring cams and .060 or less over bore otherwise stock newly rebuilt . I installed a 6.1 in my car , newly rebuilt engine which has the following modifications , .100 overbore , new stipe 330 cam, B carb. , bored out intake , oversize SS valves . My car runs strong but not really any stronger than the cars with the 5.5 . My question , is the 6.1 really any better than a 5.5 or mayby not as good a choise ? Looking at the compression chamber the 6.1 looks more like the stock head , while the 5.5 has a heart shaped chamber . Any experiance or opinions ? Bubby Sharp in KY

Re: SNYDER'S High compression heads 2 Attachment(s)
Here they are for your comparison. 5.5 on the left 6.1 on the right.

Re: SNYDER'S High compression heads Thank's for posting Milton , now people can see what I was describing as to shape . Now what I need to know is Which preforms the best? I am speculating that due to the difference in chamber shape maybe the 5.5 may be as good as the 6.1 Bubby Sharp in KY

Re: SNYDER'S High compression heads Would be very interested to know the difference, i ordered the 5.5 from Rich Falluca for my new engine, he has been waiting a year for the 6 and hoping to get them in, He said they are a better head??? What that means i dont know

Re: SNYDER'S High compression heads http://modelaparts.net/dynosheets.htm/dynosheets.html
I checked Piranios site above and found a stock A dyno run vs. the same engine with a Snyder head. The difference was about 10hp. Still looking for a 6.1 head test. |
Re: SNYDER'S High compression heads I have a snyder's 6.1 on my motor with snyder's reground cam, lighten flywheel and balanced crank stock zenith (jets correctly sized) and mine runs a lot stronger than my friends who has a 5.5 head. Of course it could be a lot of reasons why. But more compression should result in more horse power. As to your concerns about the head chamber I don't think a model a motor turns enough rpms to be greatly affected by the difference in the head configuration that usually affects response and rpms not so much the power. just my opinion any.

Re: SNYDER'S High compression heads Thanks MikeK, That is what I was looking for. I am glad my friends cars run good also . After looking at some of the tests on Pirano's site I am tempted to put the downdraft manifold I have on my car! Bubby Sharp in KY PS does anyone on this site not have insomina ?

Re: SNYDER'S High compression heads "PS does anyone on this site not have insomina ?"
I'm not sure...........I'll have to sleep on it!:D |
Re: SNYDER'S High compression heads I am currently running a Snyder 6.1 head in my S/W. Had a Snyder 5.5 in it and had some extra cash one day so upgraded to the 6.1 for the extra HP that it might bring. I could not/can not tell the difference. This was not a scientific experiment, just seat of the pants experience.
Engine specs are Rich Faluca (sp) insert rods. 20/20 crandshaft counterbalanced. Babbit mains. .040 cyl bore. Reground cam to "B" spces. Oversize valves (modern guides). Downdraft Weber carb and manifold. Cast Iron Snyders exhaust header. Aries muffler. ken |
Re: SNYDER'S High compression heads According to the Dyno report you should see about a whopping 2.8 horsepower increase. For me, not worth the money and time to upgrade from the 5.5 head....
|
Re: SNYDER'S High compression heads Bobby, I would suggest that with all of your modifications, the limiting factor now is the carb. The B carb (or any carb) will only flow a certain amount, regardless of the cam, big valves, etc.

Jim B's. comment above this one is well worth re-reading!! . |
Re: SNYDER'S High compression heads I purchased a Snyder 6:1 head to put on an engine I built last winter. I decided to go one further. I machined 0.040 of the head. I think that will get me up to 6.5:1 comp ratio.
I haven't fired the engine yet but hope to this spring. Currently rebuilding the rear axle. The rest of the mods. Full oil filtering, pressure to all mains, insert mains, Stipe 340 cam, Larger intake valves, 283 pistons, downdraft intake with 94 carb. Why? Because I can. I love to work on engines. Cal |
Re: SNYDER'S High compression heads When you read those DYNO results, you can see that the carburator makes more difference then the head. 8 HP more when changing to the Weber carb. Jim B. is 100% correct that the carb is the limiting factor.

Could you please measure and post the depth of the Flycut (counter bore) on the 5.5 head and 6.0 head. Thanks |

Re: SNYDER'S High compression heads Anybody has dyno sheets whit single carburator like Stromberg 97 or Holley 94?

Re: SNYDER'S High compression heads In this configuration of head and cam what difference does or would dual Tillys make, or are they worth the bother.
