Bool Hubcaps
 

I have seen both 30/31 and 28/29 versions of these over the years, and presume they were some enterprising entrepeneurs way of getting round the Ford copyright. Does anyone know the real history of these?

I think you got it exactly. Stores like Western Auto, Sears, J.C, Whitney, etc sold them. I have a set brand new in the box. My father bought a set in the early 60's for his town sedan, when real Ford caps were not available, except to find NOS.

Yep,You got it right.I have a box of 24 made by Kent for the 28-29.They are all still in paper wrappers in the box.The nickel is real poor quality,almost like they plated right over welding spatter.If you rub one on your arm you can lose some meat.They also will never take a shine.They have never been exposed to the weather and are not pitted,just poorly made.The box is marked 19 cents each.I don't know why I bought them,or why I keep them,I just like weird old junk.

Here's my coupe (circa 1961) with a brandy-new set of Bools! They didn't last very long.

Benson: Yeah, the red paint didn't impress the older folks in the club either. The 182A was a joy to fly, but alas, it had to go...bummer. No vapor lock problems with it at all, even with mogas. Just a sweet ride!

Hey Keith, must be a NH thing. Tom Fry had a set on that original 150-B woodie I have that originally came from Wolfboro.
