Anyone tried E-Z STEER gearbox? A vendor named E-Z STEER offers a new steering gearbox with all new components. Says his unit can bolt right in place of existing stock steering gearbox. Model A Times had an article on this product in its Winter 2009 issue.
I don't know what the price is for one of these units. Has anyone here tried E-Z STEER? Any opinions, pro or con? Thanks. |
Re: Anyone tried E-Z STEER gearbox? Do a Fordbarn search. You won't find much support for EZ Steer.

Re: Anyone tried E-Z STEER gearbox? Price is around $900. Have not tried one. Google "e-z steer" to see the website.

Re: Anyone tried E-Z STEER gearbox? This has been discussed many times but if you read this from the Hamb, it might enlighten you about how some people feel.

Re: Anyone tried E-Z STEER gearbox? I have one that I'm taking out sometime this winter.
He's still advertising in the Restorer. |
Re: Anyone tried E-Z STEER gearbox? Texas Tom: As others have said/implied BEWARE.
Is that the original iwo jima memorial?? The reason I ask is we have an "exact" copy here in New britain, CT in a small dedicated park with an eternal flame burning. Awesome to pass by at night as it can be seen from the highway. Paul in CT |
Re: Anyone tried E-Z STEER gearbox? Mel Gross in Montebello, CA makes an F100 steering box that bolts right into the Model A, a much better unit then the EZ Steer. You can reach him at 714-292-8660 or email him at .

Re: Anyone tried E-Z STEER gearbox? Yes, that's the Marine Corps War Memorial, located near Arlington National Cemetery.
I had the Leatherneck Express at the 2004 Marine Corps Marathon, at the invitation of the organizers of the race. The LEX drove the entire race route ahead of the lead runners. Great fun. I got to shake hands with the then-Commandant, Gen. Michael Hagee. Interestingly, he walked over to me and the LEX on his way to the starting line. He saw my truck and had to find out about it. He was surrounded by a zillion smiling Marine colonels. I spent six years in the Corps, and never knew there were that many colonels in the entire outfit! |
Re: Anyone tried E-Z STEER gearbox? I got one of those *&^%$ E-Z Steer units a year ago. Too mucch free play. Sent it back and he sent a replacement. After 500 miles again too much free play - over 4 inches. I was not a happy camper. Took it out two weeks ago and replaced it with a F100 Ford Steer Box. Very happy now.
A friend just installed one of the Mel Gross F100 boxes. He is a very happy driver. |
Re: Anyone tried E-Z STEER gearbox? For more info, try out the search function. There is a lot of discussion on the board.

Re: Anyone tried E-Z STEER gearbox? Sounds like FordBarners' experience suggests that I stay clear of E-Z STEER gearbox. Thanks for the advice. That's what this forum is for.
Makes one wonder why MODEL A TIMES (Winter 2009) suggested that this equipment was a wise choice for the Model A guy. The magazine said "Today we have EZ Steer to solve these problems and give us the easy steering Model A....The unit is completely new including gears and housing. The unit looks very well done." |
I've wondered that too. Guess you can't believe everything you read. |

Yeah, BUT read the statement in dark print again carefully and you will see that although it is ,IMO, an ENDORSEMENT...it says nary a word of any useage/trial use in any of their (model a times)vehicles. So, what is the 'purpose' of such a statement  Whew..nearly a thousand bucks down the drain for those who state that they relied upon such information/endorsement(s). While I'm not a Mel Gross fan, nor endorseing his equipment....at nearly HALF the price, I've never heard ANY complaints of his rebuilt f100 steering boxes. |
Re: Anyone tried E-Z STEER gearbox? I've never heard any complaints about a properly adjusted two tooth or seven tooth steering box!
I guess if I wanted an F100 steering box, I'd buy an F100. |
Re: Anyone tried E-Z STEER gearbox? I havent learned how to copy and paste quotes from previous replies.
Model A Times quote about "looks very well done" is correct. The outside is a very neat and well done miece of maching work ans casting. Its the inside that is a machinist screwup. |
