Re: 5 speed conversion I'm running a stock 3:73 set of gears in my '29 CCPU with a 5-speed and open draft shaft
|
Re: 5 speed conversion I'm running 5 speed with closed drive shaft (shortened stock torque tube) and a quick change rear end with a 3.48 final gear ratio. Cruises down the freeway @ 75-80 mph no problem. 2000 rpm @ 75 mph.

Re: 5 speed conversion thanks . trying to be sure the stock ring & pinion will work .......... steve

Re: 5 speed conversion Steve,
What is the ratio of your 5th gear? Charlie Stephens |
Re: 5 speed conversion I think you should start by establishing your overdrive ratio, there are 265 versions of the "T-5" Borg Warner/Tremec transmission, from 16% to 67%. Your final drive ratio will no doubt be the result of the OD ratio, engine mods and vehicle weight. Crazydaddyo is an expert as he manufactures the slick T-5 the closed Ford driveline adaptor and has a on hand "learning curve" gathered from actual users.

Re: 5 speed conversion I would think the ring gear would be model A, not sure what p/p cl/disc you have. Are you using stock model A starter?

Re: 5 speed conversion I put a 5 speed in my 31, and left the stock ring gear in , it is to low of a gear for me. My t-5 must be a low gear trans. I am in 5th gear at 45 to 50 mph. I will be changing to a touring gear soon.

Re: 5 speed conversion Steve, I found Speedway Motors has the clutch disc. Mine is a 14 tooth spline. If that's what you need they have it for about $80.

Re: 5 speed conversion Sorry I didn't see the posts for clutch discs earlier. Measure the clutch that you are going to use across the face, is it 9", 9 1/4", 10" and etc. Visit your auto parts store and ask for the listings for clutch discs for Chev. S-10 or GMC S-15's. See what sizes are available for all engines, STD. and optional, do any match up with your clutch plate dia.? If so ask if you have return rights and if so take one home to see if the springs in the disc will clear the flywheel bolts, if so you are home free. If not contact one of the fellows that sell the conversion kit and order one from them.
You have to remember that there are 265 versions of the Tremac/Borg Warner 5 speed, if you don't have a trans out of a S-10/S-15 you will have to figure out just what trans you have. There is a chart posted some where if you search S-10 t-5 trans conversion on here or the HAMB. There is a metal tag bolted to the tail housing that has a 4 digit number from memory it is maybe 1310 or 1350 then a dash and a 3 digit number that is the number you need to identify what car or truck it came out of, there are versions with 16% to I believe 67% over. I would offer to help but mine is in storage 2000 miles away. Remember you will have to know what car or truck your trans came out of or match them up by placing the disc over you input shaft. |
