Gas Cap/Hot tightly sealed??? Hi all,
I'm almost ready to fire up my 30! Question. How tightly sealed should the gas cap be? Does it need to breath? Mine is pretty loose, so much so that I think it's going to rattle while driving. However I'm sure there will be lots of rattles, Ha Ha. I was thinking about cutting a new rubber or cork circle to fit around the edge. But I don't want pressure to build up and blow something out. Had that happen to me with a new plastic gas tank on a 54 chevy once. I didn't have the proper vented cap one, was lots of fun! Any thoughts from the pros? thanks, Banky |
Re: Gas Cap/Hot tightly sealed??? get a new vented cap.

Re: Gas Cap/Hot tightly sealed??? Gas tank has got to breathe. If it dosen't, your fuel will cease to flow.

Re: Gas Cap/Hot tightly sealed??? The cap needs to be vented but not by being loose. Loose cap will allow gas to slosh out.

If your gas cap is not vented, it is, probably, a radiator cap. They are not vented. The radiator needs to be sealed tight, at the top. It has an overflow. MIKE :) |
Re: Gas Cap/Hot tightly sealed??? I didn't have a "proper" Gas Cap for my '30 coupe a couple of years ago when I decided to take it out for a drive. But, I did have an extra Radiator Cap. As Mike explained, it will Not fit properly. But since I didn't have a gas cap, I decided to use that old Radiator Cap just to see how my coupe ran. I wired some Large Steel Hex Nuts to the bottom of the Radiator Cap. They then hung below the cap, holding it down. I drove it slow and it worked fine. Smooth road of course.
The next day I ordered a new Gas Cap and seal......:):):D P.S. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME...... (AS THEY SAY) |
