28/29 Roadster Door Re-Skin

Got a set of roadster door in the shop. the original skins were pretty beat up . old brazing, dents ,dings ,oil can you name it!

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...d/roadster.jpg

decided to go with the new skins because it will give a much cleaner outcome compared to trying to fix everything

heres the outter skin removed from the inner. i wire wheeled the inner skin to remvoe the surface rust and fixed some pin holes in the bottom of the door but for got to take pictures of that . I primered the new skin and inner and used weld through primer on the edges where it was spot welded a few times.

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...d/DSC05159.jpg

here is the nice clean outcome

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...d/DSC05160.jpg

i had to weld the top corners they didnt look good put a quick dab of weld made it lok 100 times better

i got the skins from snyders in ohio i believe they are from brookville

they fit very very very well only place that needed trimmed was the piece that spots welds to the inner skin above the holes at the top. it was to long and was visible in the large holes

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...d/DSC05162.jpg

i simply folded the edge over with a hammer and dolly

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...d/DSC05163.jpg

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...d/DSC05165.jpg

they other door is in worse shape i will post pictures up soon of that one!

Re: 28/29 Roadster Door Re-Skin

I've two doors ready to skin, this was a form of encouragement! Did you weld the skins to the inners or is the crimp on the edge enough to hold everything in alignment?

Re: 28/29 Roadster Door Re-Skin

there originally is about 5 spot welds per side so thats what i did just followed where they were from the factory . i did that after everything was bent over.there are also 5 spot welds at the top. from the inner panel to a piece that connects to the outter.

Re: 28/29 Roadster Door Re-Skin

Are those doors different years? One a 28 and the other a 29? Different handle holes. Awesome work! I might be doing this to one of my doors in the future and now I know how to tackle it. Thanks.

Re: 28/29 Roadster Door Re-Skin

Flop,
How did the recrimping turn out? Did you use a special tool? I can't see the crimped edges real well in the picturesl. I was thinking of replacing the door skins on my doors, but thought the recrimping would look bad (wavy), unlike the original doors which were very smooth. Did your reskinning job end up with nice smooth edges and on the inside part of the crimp?

Re: 28/29 Roadster Door Re-Skin

dont know if they are different doors or not . one sets of holes was brazed up .

wrndin. the crimp came out pretty nice. i have a few marks glancing blows with the chisel end of my hammer when i first started then immediatley changed to the face of the hammer. after i hammered each edge out i went over it with a hand break then with a sanding disc. . it came out really clean . i will get more pictures for you tomorrow.

Re: 28/29 Roadster Door Re-Skin

You did a very nice job on the doors. It should hold up well for years.

Re: 28/29 Roadster Door Re-Skin

Flop,
It looks like the crimped edges turned out pretty well and straight. My original doors looked like the ones in your second set of pictures with the bottom of the inner panels rusted out badly - even worse than yours. You did a very good job of repairing them.

You do good work. I guess that bead roller comes in handy in many ways restoring old cars.

Flop.
You do amazing work! I was thinking of trying to do what you did, but I don't I have the skills that you do. I also don't have the bead roller. Roughly, how long did it take you to repair the doors? Nice job.

Re: 28/29 Roadster Door Re-Skin

Excellent workmanship. I've used Snyder's skins, too and they were excellent. Eastwood has a pair of tools to remove and then recrimp the skins. The first one pries it apart and the second one smoothly crimps the new skin. So easy to use and the crimp holds everything together.

Re: 28/29 Roadster Door Re-Skin

Nice work on the latch area repair! I didn't replace that piece on mine; it was pretty beat up, it might have been easier to do so.

My inner panels were fairly flimsy and I am stretching the doors 3" on my RPU so I made a fixture from 1/2" aluminum to hold the shape while I folded the edges of the skins over.
It was quite a long process altogether but both doors fit very well.
