sport coupe top Hi everyone,
I am new to the forum and I am restoring a 1929 sport coupe and just finished the paint. The car is all black and am wondering what a black canvas top might would look like. The car is pretty close to original but not a 400 point show car so i thought black may look better then tan. What do you think?.This is my first model a and it has been a blast to work on I own a few muscle cars but I am haveing way to much fun with this car. The wife has beern laughing at me as I drive around the block. You dont have to have horsepower to be cool! |
Re: sport coupe top Do whatever you like but I'd do tan. There's a black top business coupe that looks a lot like a sport coupe.

Re: sport coupe top 428cobrajet, I'm doing the same exact car. Just got the chassis done and am starting on the body work now. I've been pondering colors myself. There is a sport coupe for sale in the classified section from south jersey. It has a black top so you can get an idea of what it will look like.
For a Sport Coupe, I would do a tan top. JMO |
Re: sport coupe top Having a non original top may make it harder to sell one day & drop the value, but then again a street rodder might want it if it had a red top or some other easter egg color!Have it any color you want,as you are the one that has to live with it.

Re: sport coupe top 428cobrajet, glad to hear that you are having way too much fun with your A. Your thought that you don't have to have horsepower to be cool is spot on.
Enjoy the A and post a photo of it when you are done. |
Re: sport coupe top 428Cobrajet,
I've had two sport coupes, one a 29 with a black naugahide top. I liked it. My present one has the traditional tan canvas top, which incidently isn't original material. It looks good too but it doesn't hold up well if you get caught in the rain, snow or dust storm. The nicest I have seen was in a factory photo of a seal skin pattern tan naugahide. When I replace my present top of tan canvas, I will try for a tan naugahide with as close as I can find seal skin pattern. If you drive them, naugahide is far easier to maintain and keep looking good. You can wash it, buff it or armorall it. Richard Anaheim CA |
Re: sport coupe top I love the brown look!

Re: sport coupe top I just saw a 1930 Sport Coupe with a black top (photos) advertised on the Salem, Oregon Craigs List site for $13,500. Will give you a good idea what a black top looks like.

Re: sport coupe top 1 Attachment(s)
I restored a 29 sport coupe several years ago, and used brown top material from lebaron bonney. It is not correct, but closer to the color of the original. I think tan looks wrong on these cars, but we each are entitled to our opinions. On a black car, I think black canvas would look great.

Re: sport coupe top Thanks for everyones opinion. It will definitly help with my decision.

Re: sport coupe top 428Cobrajet,
A friend has a really nice'29 sport coupe with a heavy naugahyde top and a complete, really neat full headliner from the same material. He's a retired boat upholsterer. It's so quiet with windows closed. |
