Droping the 51 pan Quick question before I start. Will the pan drop without removing the tie rod on a 51? Need to pull a piston with a broken ring. Thanks!

Re: Droping the 51 pan interesting question-what is required to drop oil pan on a stock 51 flathead. Does the engine have to be raised among other things?

Re: Droping the 51 pan I assume rou are refering to a 1951 Ford car with the center sump pan. Mercury and pickup are different to a certain degree.

Re: Droping the 51 pan From the shop manual:
"Drain crankcase. Remove the starter motor, clutch return spring, and the flywheel housing front cover. Remove the bolt retaining the road air breather duct and remove the duct. Remove the bolts retaining the steering gear idler arm bracket to the frame. Remove the steering gear arm and drop the idler arm connecting rod until it hangs from the spindle arms. Unscrew the oil level indicator tube. Remove the oil pan retaining screws and the oil pan. The two front retaining screws can be reached through access holes provided in the frame front cross member. Note: On some engines it will be necessary to dis-connect the front engine supports and lift the front of the engine. |
Re: Droping the 51 pan When I dropped the pan on my '50 I had to loosen the motor mounts and jack up the engine.

Re: Droping the 51 pan You might have to rotate the crank shaft some to get clearance at the front of the pan.
