46 Ford column lock, How does it work?
 

I am in the process of rebuilding my column drop with lock for my 46 business coupe and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on how the lock actually functions? It looks like it just presses against the shaft is that true? Also in the process of trying to remove my stuck lock cylinder I drilled out the pin behind the lock as well as the lock pin under the lock cylinder. What does the other pin hold in? Can I just install a new one? I am going to tap out the lock retainer pin hole for an allen bolt. I drilled out the other pin to try ang gain more access to the lock cylinder. Mine was severely damaged as it appears to have had the lock drilled out years ago. With both the pins out I still can not remove the cylinder. I have used heat, penetrant etc. all to no avail, any more suggestions?

I don't have a '46, but my '38 only has one pin holding it in and it inserts into a recess in the side of the lock cylinder. If you drilled it out there might be pieces of the retainer still in there. It retainer is usually drilled, tapped and pulled out with a bolt. With the retainer pin out it should slide out.

There is a slot in the side of the steering lock shaft that the ignition lock cylinder slides into. It should not interfere with the cylinder coming out unless the steering is locked in a bind. If your steering is locked you can shake the wheel back and forth to relieve the bind.

I have finally removed my lock cylinder from the column drop. I had to use a punch, chisel, vise grips and a an air body saw. It was a real ordeal. mine was really stuck in there and the prvious owner had drilled it out so much I couldn't get a screw or bolt to thread for a slide hammer. Mine came out in pieces. As for the rear pin and what it does. After I got my cylinder out, I noticed that there is a slot along the back of the pin that actually slides to lock the column. This slot lines up with that hole for the rar pin. So the pin keeps the lock pin from turning and keeps it in alignment with the lock cylinder tab. Thanks to everyone on here for there help.
