valve guide seals
 

hey guys, I was wondering if yu put the seals on the exhaust guides ?
I was thinking they would burn off, but the gasket kit I got has enofe for all guides.
also, iv got some flat, square seals and some round ones, which are better ?

Hi Elwood, Use the round ones, on the int. only. I'll tell you how to install them with out tearing them. Make sure the guide hole is real clean, I use a 1in. blueberry wheel cyl. hone, I do this before the final cleaning of the block, grind a little bevel on the top edge of the lifter on the bench grinder, this makes the seal go on easier, smear a little assemably lube on the lifter and you can roll the seal on with your fingers, Now assemble the whole valve assemably. I use Lube br Plate assemably grease, smear the guide hole and the guide, insert the ass. in the block and with the back palm of you hand tunk the head of the valve and it will slip right in without ripping the seal. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Walt

Elwood, Walt is right ,intake guides only, if ou use them on the exhaust guides the heat vulcanises them to the guide and lifter bore, makes them almost impossible to remove the next time

I just asked the machine shop the same thing when I picked my block up. They said put them on both intake and exhaust, but I had read an earlier thread that said don't. I'm going to stick with the experience of the Ford Barn.

I don't use any, just a thin film of RTV on the guide befor installing. Been doing it for years.

hey ol ron you use the rtv only on the intakes ?
what got yu to stop using the guide seals ?

Very interesting story. One day back in the 60's when I was putting together one of the stockcar engines I didn't have any seals. My friend Bill Barth said, use RTV, Ford never used seals untill late 49 and the fit of the guide is pretty tight, So I did. The following year when I took the engine apart to change cams I found the intake guides sealed very well. After that I never used them again. I also used never seize on the exhaust.
