29 open car windshield stay open?

When I attempt to "open" my windshield at anything over say 20 mph the wind quickly closes the windshield. I've resorted to using something to hold the window open at speed. So after doing that for years, I'll finally ask.....is this typical of a '29 open car or perhaps I'm missing something that will allow me to hold the windshield open?

I've tightened the wing nuts as much as possible but to no benefit.

Thanks
Al

don't know what to tell ya but do you have flat spring tension washers behind the stanchion wing nuts[if 28/29 have them?]? I just know about 30/31 open cars and they are listed with A+L Parts and i have them on my car...I do not know much about 28/29's. sorry

Thanks and Congratulations on your Henry Award. I don't have the spring tension washers......I'll check to see if 28/29 had them. Even if they didn't this one might get them.

Thanks.

Snyders carries swing arms that are notched to hold the windshield open in
six different positions. This is an accessory that was not available at the time
the Model A was manufactured. Catalog number is: A-45463-N.

Jack, as far as I know, the open cars didn't use swing arms. They only had wing nuts on the stanchions.

Mine does the same thing on my roadster. I have an extra lower radiator hose that I keep on the shift lever, and use that to prop the windshield open.

Ed, you could be right. The catalog didn't mention whether or
not it was vehicle specific. I'm not familiar with open cars. I'm
sure if Al calls Snyder's they can answer his questions. Their number
is 888-262-5712.

I've posted on this subject a few times in the past. Here is a copy of one of my earlier posts:

It's usually is caused by reproduction parts and many can contribute. You will have to investigate to determine just what you have going on there.
Note that the windshield is held in position by friction between the cone on each end of the windshield and their MATING cups within the stanchions. There are a number of things that can prevent them from mating properly.

1. A cup has been replaced in one or both stanchions. A repro may not have the correct shape, a cup not tack welded in can turn with the windshield, or a cup tack welded in at any angle not true to the windshield could reduce the mating surface by as much as 85% (15% remaining).

2. The special nut that holds the cone to the windshield frame via the threaded stud is too thick (I've seen this). The thicker nut bottoms out in the base of the cup before the cone is pulled tight into the cup.

3. Cups or cones (most likely) are reproductions and the tapers don't fit well enough to provide the necessary mating surface.

I would first inspect VERY closely for ANY visible spaces or gaps between each cone and cup. This could be top, bottom, front, rear, or all around. This may or maynot tell you quite abit. Next, remove one stanchion and windshield frame and inspect the cones for markings. It should be very clear from these markings where the contact points are or MORE importantly where they aren't!

Check it out and see what you find. If you don't see an obvious solution then we can take it forward from there.

I just got back from having lunch with a guy that has a roadster
and sure enough Ed is right, the open cars don't have the swing
arms. Sorry about that.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'll need to do some research to see what I'm dealing with.
