I go to 45 ft-lbs with cast iron & clean stud threads. Re-torque often till readings stabilize. I used to go to 30 with aluminum. Same re-torque method. Jack E/NJ |
Re: Head torque for 1934 221 engine Back in the dark ages I made the mistake { once } of doing them like a later model motor - 70 ft # & this accomplished thread removal on numerous studs . Pete at little dearborn when they were still on washington avenue in north MPLS got a real laugh out of that . He was a really great guy - despite the fact he enjoyed teasing a dumb 14 year old kid :D . YES I deserved it & in reality he was a HUGE help to me - God rest his soul . Roger is in charge now & he is a big help also . The troops have it right above & allz I will add is I use anti -seize on the nuts . David J

Re: Head torque for 1934 221 engine I've been using 45 ft/lbs on everything since the beginning of time. Broke and stripped too many . Now lets look at a blown nitro burning Hemi with 10 studs torqued to 100 lbs each, that means the head has a 1000 lbs of clamping force. NOW, lets take a Flathead with 24 studs torqued to 45 lbs equals = 1080 lbs. Kinda makes you think.
