Rouge Judging
 

Is there any place that has the judging standards for Rouge class? I am curious how various items are scored. For example repainting a part, new bolts vs old bolts, twist off bolts vs regular bolts and so on. For example, part of my engine is painted black....does that count as a drive train deduction? Or is it OK as long as the part is original?

Not trying to get to technical, but it would be nice to know as I work on the car, what might be deducted. I like to "Restore/repaint" a part if I had to take it off the car to work on. I also like to clean up and use original nuts and bolts when I can.

If you are going for Rouge, it needs to be original, not taken off, cleaned up and put back on. Quit "restoring" it or you will be out of the Rouge class.

As mentioned above, read the book.

The first year we took our 46 to an EFV8 regional we entered the concourse just to see how the car measured up. 880 points for a secound. I got the judging sheet and decided I would not change anything. So this year we just entered the Rouge division. As far as I know there is no point judging and it seemed everyone got a Rouge plaque. Next regional may enter touring. The bottom line is that the regionals are a fun event so, don't get hung up on judging. Build/restore your car as you like it and then come to the regionals and enjoy the event.

Maybe Lawson can explain what he means that if you work on your car "you will be out of the Rouge class". Has he ever seen someone kicked out of the Rouge??

I am sure Lawson meant out of the running for the Rouge Class. I read the roster section. it is pretty light, I do see where is says repainted parts are not original. I was looking to get an idea of how much. I am not building it to be judged, but would like to show it some day. I have not done much. I ded repaint the carb I rebuilt but have a spare... I repanted the pedal plates, but I am putting them on new floorboards so it would look odd to put old rusty ones on. I was kinda curious what makes up 90%? Is it based on a count of total parts? My interior definately won't qualify. My drive train should, not sure on the exterior.

Jim, I think Oldford2 said it all with the statement "Build / Restore your car as you like it and then come to the regionals and enjoy the event. Like John, enter your car in a class; like Rouge, or any class for that matter, you will get feedback on your car and then you can decide what if any items you want to correct or not. ...LouB.

In Rouge Class you can be judged for interior, exterior, and running gear. You can specify which of those three areas you would like your car to be judged in. In 2007 at the ENM in Fairfax, VA I got a Rouge award in all three areas. In 2010 at the ENM in Charlotte, NC and WNM in St George, Utah I got a Rouge award for interior and exterior but not running gear because I had switched the original engine with another rebuilt '35 engine until I can put new rings in the original engine. In 2011 at the ENM in Saratoga Springs, NY I got Rouge for interior only because I had all four fenders repainted about one month before the meet and then at the CNM in Auburn they gave me Rouge for interior and running gear. Sometimes it just depends on who the judges are. I put my car in Rouge because I'm not sure where else it would fit. After getting the Rouge award in 2007 in all three areas I really don't care if I win any more awards. I really enjoy driving my car more than showing it at meets. If something original needs to be changed/replaced to improve saftey, ride or handling it gets changed. That's more important to me than winning an award.

Been there done that, now I do not enter any vehicles for judging.

I do not mean you could not work on your car. If your generator craps out, fix it, but do not repaint it. Leave it like it came off of the car, patina and all, if you are going to enter Rouge class. No harm meant.

I guess just being a numbers sort of guy, I get curious as to how they do it. Is there anyone on here that has judged the class?

I have judged the Rouge class and also owned a Rouge car. Cleaning up things on the car is fine. The car is judged in three areas; running gear, exterior and interior. You can get an award for any of the three categories. You can replace those items that wear out with routine use; hoses. belts, tires, etc. As for repainting things you have to be careful. Some touch up is allowable on the exterior. Without going into great detail here I suggest you check the V-8 Club website and look at the sample judging sheets. This will tell you what is allowable in the Rouge division.

TJ....I had looked there before and read the instructions, but I went back and did finally find what I was looking for under the "Judging Supplement 1932 - 1948". This is the form with how much is taken off for what. It really helps to know what isn't a big deal and what parts you really should hunt down an original for.

On my '50 rouge Ford, at first, I got all 3 areas and then I replaced the mats and seat covers and just got 2 areas and then, after I lost a piston in Kansas and rebuilt the engine, I just get the exterior that is totally untouched, but really looks pretty sad. But it gets as much or more attention than any others at a meet. I have had it in 10 Nat meets now since 2004.

I show my 37 Tudor in the Rouge Class and take all (3) awards for drive train, exterior and interior, as my 37 is original/unrestored.

I did pull the V8 60 to replace the head gaskets and solder pin holes in the oil pan and painted the engine block before reinstalling the engine, but IIRC, if 90% or more of each area is original/unrestored, you can still earn the awards.
