APPLE GREEN Wheel UPDATE 4 Attachment(s)
Well after much thought and reading the posts from members and Ken Ehrenhofer we decided that the color was not the CORRECT Apple Green as Ford has used. After taking the swatch to the paint store we did 2 spray outs and came away very happy with what we believe is a TRUE Apple Green vs. the original color of SAGE GREEN.. As the Sage is a great color it is NOT Apple Green, I have made a color comparison chart that I hope will help others when choosing this color. The photos were taken in the same booth under the same lighting and camera setting. You can see a significant color difference and even more in the sunlight. When looking at the spray out card against the OLD SAGE you can clearly see that what we re-did is in our opinion a TRUE APPLE GREEN, and has that Granny Smith Apple Color.
Hope this helps all for their paint choice also....Thanks again to all who assisted in the thread.....What say you all on your opinions now? |
Re: APPLE GREEN Wheel UPDATE The "new" color is much less alarming !
|
Re: APPLE GREEN Wheel UPDATE I don't know if your apple green is exactly as the original color, but I think it is a much nicer green and I think you will be happier with it in the long run. Given a choice between the two, without knowing anything more about them I think I would have chosen that apple green shade. It just "looks right".

Re: APPLE GREEN Wheel UPDATE One of my favorite wheel colors! Thanks for the info.

Re: APPLE GREEN Wheel UPDATE AAAHHH That makes it clear, the 16" wires I bought the other day were said to be Apple green but when I got them I thought it looked sorta like John Deereish green. And now I see they were very close to Apple.
Thanks for the pics!! Any chance you have the code? |
Re: APPLE GREEN Wheel UPDATE This paint was formulated in Concept.
We used the PPG Phrophet System and took a reading from the chip in the MAFCA paint guide. So the formula we used is #45951 but in order to get the the correct color info you need: SKU DESC INC. (PART) DMC900 STR WHITE 101.6 DMC928 YELLOW 2757.5 DMC919 YELLOW LF 409.8 DMC902 BLACK 38.6 DMC923 BLUE 13.9 DMC937 GREEN 85.5 DMC984 CLEAR 1035.6 Any questions, Ken |

Re: APPLE GREEN Wheel UPDATE Mike: Looks much BETTER!! There was a recent post about someone just getting an original 30 4 dr sedan (w/pictures). It had the green wheels that look like the majority I've seen and exact or very close to what you and Ken have come up with. FWIW

Re: APPLE GREEN Wheel UPDATE Apple green is my favorite wheel and strip color.
|
Re: APPLE GREEN Wheel UPDATE Your final mix is perfect IMO, the Sage Green it far too electric, but would look great on a Black Camaro with wide Green stripes.
|
Re: APPLE GREEN Wheel UPDATE Thats the color I want to paint my CC pickup . is the #45951the ppg paint code yall started with and than ajusted with the other colors you mentioned?
|
Re: APPLE GREEN Wheel UPDATE The #45951 is the number of the formula.
All of the components listed make up one gallon. You put a empty gallon can on the scale and start with the top item DMC900 Str White and pour into the can until the computer says you have added 101.6 parts then you go to the next pigment DMC928 yellow and add in 2757.5 parts of that material and so on until you have added a total of 4442.5 parts to make one gallon of apple green. The neat part is they can call up on the computer to make 4 ounces or 10 ounces so you can get a sample to spray out to see if you like it or not. And at these prices doing a sample is a real good idea, Ken:D |
Re: APPLE GREEN Wheel UPDATE Ken can you take a pic of the spray out OVER the color swatch in the PAFG.

Here are the pictures comparing to the chip in the MAFCA book.
Ken I think we are a little more green with the new color than the MAFCA chip. Do not forget we computer scanned the chip to get this formula, I like the new color over the color on the chip. If this all makes any sense to you, Ken |
Re: APPLE GREEN Wheel UPDATE I posted the pics of my new Town Sedan with Apple Green wheels. Unfortunately, the wheels area repaint and I believe reflect the "too intense" green we are talking about. However, the dash pinstripe is original and the color appears much more "sedate". It's small, but absolutely original IMHO. I will probably do a wheel repaint at some time in the future with the "new" "old" apple green.

This has been a "back and forth" over the years. The scanning systems have come a long way. However they all have something in common including the PPG Phrophet System. First, what they DON'T do is create a formula. What they DO do is find the closest color in their massive data base and provide the formula for that color. For some colors they can come pretty darn close (but rarely if ever perfect). For other colors they can be simply mediocre at best. Although they are few and far between, good color mixers can do better by eye with many of our colors. I've been involved in a few special mixes as I can generally see colors very well. However for some reason I can't do most yellows to save my life! |
