Dumb windshield question

I have another stupid question, well OK, 2 or 3.. I understand that the later model[30-31] roadster windshields are 13" or 15" high, but, where is this measurement taken ??
Apparently there were some deluxe models with rear mounted spare tire and standards with cowl lights ??

Re: Dumb windshield question

I don't know the measurment for a standard roadster but a deluxe roadster stantion is 12" tall, that is from the base of the curved bottom to the top of the stantion. 1931 deluxe roadsters came with a rear spare tire. In 1930 they were equiped from the factory with a luggage rack and left front tire wheel well. 1931 they dropped those items from the factory.

OK,thanks.. Since mine is/are 13.5"[total length], I guess its a STD[mid-31] with a chromed windshield frame, dual mirrors and cowl lights..

Re: Dumb windshield question

I don't know whether this thing came with the chrome windshield frame, dual mirrors and cowl lights.. But this is the way I bought it in '76.. The suppliers have STD frames either primed or chromed.. I think this car is a STD that has been 'deluxed' and If or when I get to it I'd like to put it back to as original as I can.. I still need to get a set of JS.. I'm just trying to get everything in some kind of order so it will only be out of service for as short a time as possible..

Re: Dumb windshield question

The standards had painted windshield frames. The cowl lights weren't standard on the std. roadster but as a ford accessory could be added by the dealer.

My late 30 is a standard with cowl lights added.

Re: Dumb windshield question

If you have a 31 Standard you have a pretty rare bird. They only made around 5000 of them. Take the fact that kids liked them to ram around, the rodders always liked roadsters, and the rust factor of an open car,how many can be left? Then most restorers of the 60's and 70's have monkeyed the remaining ones into DeLuxes.Your top irons and bows are completely different on the Standards from the DeLuxes too.If you stand facing the side of the car on the Standard the rear of the top will slant back a little. On the DeLuxe the top will lean ahead a little. The Standard is taller,it makes quite a difference to me getting in and out. Also in a DeLuxe I feel like my head is being pushed ahead. It really doesn't touch, but it feels too close.

Re: Dumb windshield question

I think this one was monkeyed with, probably in the 60s.. I can understand painting one to look like a deluxe and adding cowl lights, but, I'm kinda surprised that someone took the time and went to the expense of chroming the windshield frame and installing deluxe style interior.. Once I became aware that there was a difference, it seems this is a STD.. I guess the windshield and top are the give-a-way.. I think I'll remeasure the windshield posts, total length is 13.5".. I want to see where 12" comes to, but, I don't think the top posts/studs are 1.5" long.. I'm pretty sure its supposed to be a STD.. Actually the more I think about and look at them, I like the STD ..

OK - trying to clarify the same question...

31 roadster I'm working on...

Tan top has (steam?) bent wood bows, rear spare, cowl lamps...

Chrome windshield - 13.5" high at CENTER; 15" high at sides (windshield not stanchions)

Macs says:
- windshield frame: std is 15-1/4", deluxe 13-1/2" but does say where measurement is taken
- upper stanchions: std 13-1/2" long, deluxe 12"

:confused::confused:

Don't mean to hijack your thread, but I am working on the same ATM.

With reference to height of roof.....

Is the rear and middle bow about 2 inches lower with the lower stanchions?

Or does the roof just slope down more to screen?

If it is lower, can anyone supply a height of top of rear bow from deck.

Re: Dumb windshield question

I too have wondered about where the windshields are measured. I just checked mine and the height from the bottom of the windshield to the top of the stanchion is 14 3/4 inches. The measurement in the center of the windshield from the bottom of the curve to the top of the windshield is 13 inches. Windhshield frame and stanchions are chrome. Anyone have any idea of what this windshield could have come off of?

Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Re: Dumb windshield question

I believe chrome would indicate it came off of a deluxe, if it's original.

Re: Dumb windshield question

To tell the difference between a 1930-31 open car Standard vs DeLuxe stanchion look at the finger like stud on the top. If it is at an angle to the stanchion it is for a DeLuxe. If it is not at an angle but is straight, it is for a Standard.

Re: Dumb windshield question

I have an even dumber question? Is the difference between a slant windshield and a regular one simply that the slant one slants out to let air in while the regular doesnt move at all?

The slant windshield slopes to the rear and has no outside sun visor, while earlier models are vertical and have an outside sunvisor. They all can be opened for air flow.

No. First glance I'd call it a 1930 AA, but I'd need to see more details, and others know more about the AA's and may be of more help.

Re: Dumb windshield question

No. Slant windows referred to (I'll say) late 31 4 dr, cabriolets, and victorias. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
