Source of Nickel Plated Screws
 

I am looking for a supplier of Model A hardware that is nickel plated. For example does anyone sell nickle plated screws that attach the exterior door handles to the car. I already checked with A&L.

If they are not available I will sent the screws out for nickel plating which takes additional time/money.

Check out Macs. They have a bunch of individual screws listed that are nickel plated. All in the Hardware section.

You can also polish screws, made of stainless steel, which is not as brilliant as chrome. You don't have to worry about them discoloring either.

Hunter, while polishing stainless is one possibility, be sure to review the edges as some of the newer screws have 'stamping flash' around the perimeter and do not have the radiused bottom to the screwdriver slot. Additionnaly, most store bought screws that I have been able to locate have a small flat area at the very center that has to be dealt with as well, and stainless in particular is hard to polish this out.

Small hardware is very hard to find in good enough condition to use for your intentions, and I am very dissapointed that my plater charges me upwards of $3 per screw ('labor intensive', he states).

This Panel Truck is testing my nerves accumulating original screw hardware that is suitable for nickel plating, and then having to pay for the plating in addition.

I have had some luck buying brass screws. This modification work is much easier to do, and most of the brass items do not have the center flat spot.
This is much closer to original as well, but you are still left with the plating issue.

Hunter, Will's advice is very correct. I believe you are doing a fine point car and therefore you may have to "bite the bullet" as Will is doing. I'm pulling my hair out wrt original wiring for two cars now. I haven't started with the hardware.

To ad to the fine point views, polished stainless will have a slight blue hue to the bright silvery finish as the addition that makes stainless what it is, is chromium. Nickel will have a slight yellow hue to the silvery finish. It is obvous when you place a stainless part beside a nickel plated part.

If you are trying to build a national winner car, you might not get away with stainless screws, but for a good looking local winning car, the stainless should work for you.

Have you tried roy nacewicz. He may be listed in the vendor's list either here or the EV8 forum. Do a search. If it's a ford nut, bolt, screw, etc he's supposed to have it. Hope this helps.

I have found the modern oval head stainless screws to be too 'thick'. The original screws came to a sharp point at the edge. The modern ones are too thick and will stick out higher plus they have a rounded edge.

I chucked them up in my battery operated drill and used a file to dress the head to shape. Then I used successive grits of sand paper to remove all the scratches so I could buff to a polish.

I had to do this with the screws for my 68C door dovetails from A&L. They were supplied with modern stainless screws and they stuck out a bit far to the point of interfering during door closing. Ya I know they shouldn't, but I resurrected some pretty bad body stuff and learned on the way. It did not take long to make the screws look right and fit good. Yes, there is a color difference between the nickel and the stainless.

Check www.fordbolt.com They sell a lot of specialty Model A bolts. Pretty neat company really. Even sells the original style fender welting with the cardboard inside rather than plastic. I bet they have the screws you are looking for.
