rear oil leak in motor
 

I just put a new inserted engine in my car and it has a leak in the rear. it don't apear to be coming frrom the end of the crank or oil pan but there is oil on the cap bolts and up in the bolt area that holds the flywheel housing on. has anyone had either of thes bolts leak?:mad:

I think if I had just dropper $4-6K I would have already been in touch with the builder. JMO

yes.. contact the builder and see what he has to say.. no sense trying to take things apart because that might void any warranty

Did you install the flywheel housing with a gasket?

Did you use the gasket between the flywheel housing and engine. If not it will leak out the cam bearing. I have also found some engines that the bolt hole below the cam shaft goes into the engine. So the oil will work around the bolt and come through the lock washer if you use one. There should not be a washer there. But I like to use a washer so I put sealer on the bolt threads.

Hey I just pulled the transmission and fllywheel and the only oil I can see looks like it came from that bolt. The only question in my mind is how it dripped from the bearing cap bolts unless the flywheel turning slung it around them.I brought this motor from an A-Model buff who had it rebuilt several years ago and never used it. The rebuilder died but he was well respected as he rebuilt several in our local club and all satisfactory jobs.The rear seal is dry. Thanks for the sugestion

I do have the gasket between the motor and flywheel houshing

The housing was cracked around the bolt and about one inch to the right.

If this is the flywheel housing with the crack, that is quite common and should have no effect on the oil leak. Oil can get through to the rear main cap bolts and leak, that's why I like to put a thin layer of silicone along the block to cap and on the cap bolts.
