Need some advice I need some advice from you all. I'm a long time lurker and sometimes poster and I've learned a lot from you all.
Today I decided to adjust my main and rod bearings and everything went great untill I was putting the rear main back together, Trying to make sure that I didn't drop the nuts in the flywheel housing, I dropped the drivers side shims. While trying to fish them out they dropped to the bottom of the housing. :( I tried to fish them out but no luck. I took the starter off and I was thinking about putting a big gob of grease on the flywheel, put the car in gear, push it and hope it would pick them up. What ideas do you have short of pulling the motor or rear end? How much damage would it do to leave them in there and just replace them? I appreciate any help you can offer. Tim in Hotlanta |
Re: Need some advice Could you go from the inspection cover.

Re: Need some advice You may have to remove the nuts and springs from the front end radius support ball, to drop the ball end far enough in order to fish the shims out the bottom of the flywheel housing

Re: Need some advice Thanks for the help. I'll look at both of these ideas.

Re: Need some advice Don't know how you'd make thru the ball housing. Pin and felt in the way. Try the grease.

Re: Need some advice Are they made of brass? Thin soft metal can't do much to a big, burley flywheel. I think leave them there, although they would be handy to put back where they belong. I am surely not an expert and would like to hear why this may not be a good idea.

Re: Need some advice I was thinking like Greg. They probably pasted themselves in the oil slick to the bottom or the side of the cover and won't move again until the next time you pull the flywheel.

Re: Need some advice Well, the gob of grease didn't work.
I think I'm going leave them there and replace them. I appreciate the ideas and advice. Tim |
