Is a prefect dizzy worth trying?
 

I have a few hills on the only highway in and out of my place.

The original motor does not have much power.

Tuning is good...timing and mixture.

Have not done a compression check.

Never have driven another model A to compare.

A prefect dizzy is on ebay ATM, is it worth fitting to try?

Or does it do the same job when on constant revs/speed uphill pulling as the manual lever would do?

I presume it has better cam lobes for different dwell as well.

I know it will save manual lever timing when chugging around the streets, but what about constant pulling?

I would rather save the money and keep it original if the prefect one won't give me any more pulling power.

Save your money. Check your dist. body for a tight fit, the same on your rotor. You should have 25/30 thou. clearance on the rotor gap. Check the point gap on all 4 lobes, and they should be the same.There should be no side play when you try to wiggle the shaft. Repair as necessary. also the B dist. cam does give you more dwell, and I think thats the one most parts places carry. Chuck

The advantage would be the auto advance. I cant see how that would make more power as such. If your original distributor is clean, tight, no slop in the shaft, no slop in the top plate, and has a new model B type cam in it, you should get all that you would from any other points distributor. in my opinion. Others may vary.

The Prefect, or any Ford 10 model, dissy was a common swap on Model As in the 60s. Auto advance has gotta be good.

I am thinking of the same change, I now have 3 prefect Dizzys. There is a difference in the lobes and advance units in two of mine. No one could tell me on the Hamb what difference they would make and suggested having them tested on a machine. I plan to try one down the track and see what happens I found some nice yellow cloth coved wire for the leads. I paid $50 for the first dizzy and $5 for the other pair. I thinks there cant be many of these dizzys about and the new mech advance dizzys from Macs etc are a couple of hundred $, so get it if you can afford it.
