'30-'31 Steering column support mount *~*

Re: '30-'31 Steering column support mount If You do it correctly the first time You will save alot of headache! After 80 years most every possible improvement possible has been done. Let Us know what You decide.

Re: '30-'31 Steering column support mount Mount the support the way the Ford engineers designed it to be mounted. Your way will allow for a greater moment or twist at the connection and will warp your firewall the first time someone pulls on the wheel.

Re: '30-'31 Steering column support mount i do not understand the problem. If your gas tank/cowl bolts are worn out,put in new bolts. What year is the car? If it is a 30-31 the support bolts right on. If it is a 28-29 you need a 1/4" spacer and need to adapt the spacer to fit the holes in your car and the holes in the support.

Re: '30-'31 Steering column support mount I put mine on with no problem. I don't think I understand what problem you are having. Don't understand how you would mount it to the firewall. Bill

Re: '30-'31 Steering column support mount Are you concerned that you may not be able to unscrew the existing bolts because of rust? That can certainly happen. When I took apart my car, it was real tough getting all those bolts out. I ended up wrecking about 4 of the caged nuts on that trim strip, and I had to use a hacksaw or Dremel on a couple of the bolts. Before deciding what to do, you can try to loosen the relevant bolts and see how it goes, before deciding to switch to plan B...

Do I understand correctly that you are thinking of installing the bracket (somehow) near the floor in front of the gas tank? If so, be aware that it will be so close to the frame mounting and so far from the steering wheel that it will not provide anywhere near enough support for the column. If you are that concerned about getting the dash rail bolts out, then leave the project until such time as you can "do it right." The question is not whether it's a "non-Ford way" but whether it's a way that will work at all. If I did it right, there should be two pdf files attached showing installation of the bracket. Joe |
Re: '30-'31 Steering column support mount Thanks Joe, those PDF's looked good, sure miss the old format. Now I am homesick. Rod
